Yukin has always been a free spirit, preferring to fly wherever the winds take her and constantly exploring new lands instead of settling down and starting a family. She does not remember when or where she was hatched, nor does she remember any family. Her first memory was of the snow all around her -- pure, cold, and peaceful; at that moment she could have been the only one in the world. She chased the snow, following it from place to place as it heralded winter over the lands.

As Yukin grew older, she realized that it was not she who was chasing the snow -- rather, the snow was chasing her. She was the one who was bringing winter -- the cold, the winds, and the snow-clouds in the sky. After her discovery, she started to explore her magical powers. She learned to bend the cold and the winds to her will, and to create snow and ice out of water. With her newfound powers, she found a new responsibility: to bring winter on time to the right places, and with winter came frost-patterns on windows and tree-trunks, along with cloud-creatures in the sky that everybody could enjoy.

One day as she entered a forest to bring winter, Yukin was stopped by a great dragon queen who demanded to know why she was killing off all the beautiful flowers and smothering vibrant life in freezing ice. Yukin had never met someone who did not appreciate her services before, and she was surprised that anybody could look upon winter so harshly. She was determined to show the dragon queen the joy and peace that could be found in winter, showing her her frost-patterns and cloud-creatures and the feeling of being alone in the world when everything else is asleep underneath the snow. She showed the dragon queen that winter was not a time of death, but of rest, so that plants and animals alike could have more energy to be lively in the spring.

Eventually, the dragon queen realized the beauty of winter and apologized for her assumptions about winter. She introduced herself as Sika and offered Yukin a place to stay in her forest. Yukin was surprised once again, as she had never had a family or a community where she could settle in. She desperately wanted to agree, but she could not forget her responsibility of bringing winter across the globe. Sika recognized her dilemma and offered another choice: Yukin could continue her travels, but for the last fourth of the year, when it was winter in Sika’s forest, she would return and stay until the next year. Yukin agreed whole-heartedly, overjoyed to finally have a place she could call home.

For a long time this was Yukin's life -- bringing winter around the world and returning to Sika's forest over the winter -- and she was quite happy with it. Then, one day she started hearing whispers about a mysterious "Night Tiger," an unseen protector of animals in need. There were legends of him defending animals trapped in human cities from machines and helping them find their way back to the wilderness -- at the same time, there were stories of how his home had been destroyed and how he had no family. When Yukin heard this, she thought of herself before she met Sika and wished to help him. After discussing her plans with Sika, she decided to go find this Night Tiger and bring him back to the forest.

The next year, as she was busy spreading winter, Yukin found a grey striped dragon lurking in a shadowy alleyway deep in the heart of a human city. She had found the Night Tiger, who introduced himself as Mid. At first, Mid refused to leave the city when Yukin asked him to return to Sika's forest with her; however, after she offered to raise some wards around the city to keep animals from wandering inside and becoming trapped, he agreed. And so they left.

Now, Yukin's life is much the same -- with one small difference: she now has a new member in her little family, Mid. Though much of the year she still wanders the globe by herself, she is comforted in the fact that at the end of the year, she always has a safe home and a caring community to return to.
