She had been tireless in her preparations. Centuries of waiting, hiding, and learning had kept her on her toes at all times. Now, was no different.

Lucien had been a fool to reveal himself to her, even in his subtley.. And her lover, her mate, soon found that the wolf he’d given his heart to, had an arsenal of weaponry, and a grudge behind her that ran far longer than he hoped to comprehend in a single heartfelt evening. Closets he thought filled with clothes hid treasure troves of guns. Every size, every shape, with enough ammo to give the entire police force of Las Vegas a run for their money. Eva had been caught without a weapon, or any sense of defense more than once in the long years that she, and the dragon had hunted one another.. She’d barely survived those times, and had suffered physical injury that made her bones ache, even now. But no matter what, she’d always slipped through his claws, like a fish.. This time, there would be no escape, and no running. The Katagari wolf had chosen this city to den with her mate.. And she would do what any animal with a trespasser, a threat to home and hearth, would do.

She would tear it apart.

Taeva’s mercy had known no limits, so long ago.. But this was not she. This was not the fair blond maiden, who had given every bit of herself to the people around her.. Who gave to all, and kept little for herself.. Who loved blindly, and believed willingly.
This was Eva.
And she was merciless.

Bloodthirsty.

Tempered only by the calloused touch of a cowboy’s hand. Her Rainier.

Curled upon her bed, she dozed with him. The nights had been long, sleepless, and filled with errands that needed to be run, and plans that needed to be complete.. The chaos amongst the Dark Hunters, had simply provided good cover, and she remained, for the most part, unseen. When she made moves.. they were articulate, and careful, like the pieces on a chess-board. Her strength of mind had not waned in the century of rest, and she’d never allowed the animal in her to destroy it.. If anything, her animal was her strength. She hunted when she wished to hunt, howled when she wished to howl, and mated when she wished to mate. There was no reason for the wilder parts of herself to rebel against such a long leash.

Sentinels would call her a Slayer. Katagari would call her a Strati, and Arcadians.. would simply call her a beast. And even beasts, needed sleep.. But, as it was, sleep was a vulnerable time.. and true to form, Lucien always struck vulnerability.

Eva, even half-sleeping, could feel him. It was like a darkness in the corner of her mind, stirring, moving.. When he was close she could smell him, his scent filling her nose as if he’d pressed her against his very chest. Slowly, as if she’d simply been feigning rest, her eyes opened, a dark green, burned with amber. Large blond ears, tattered and broken, were forward, fixated as she listened, barely breathing, as if one stray exhale could send the entire building crumbling. Perhaps if she were still, the darkness would pass, and he would be gone… The silence made her ears ring, only interrupted by the slow, meticulous steps he took, approaching her door. When they stopped, she moved, quickly, quietly, leaping to the rug on her own side of the bed, shifting as she did, trying not to curse aloud.

For a few moments she’d hoped it was a bad dream. Hoped that the steps she heard were simply the steps of a visitor, to a neighbor.. Ah, but Eva didn't have neighbors. The walls on each side of her apartment were empty, and she dominated the top floor like a Queen. The damnable, cursed, wretched dragon was alone, but he’d still found her.. The implications and dangers rang in her mind like sirens. Lucien had caught her off guard, surrounded by weaponry, but unprepared for such sudden call to battle. There would be no time to dress and prepare. He was there, lurking at her door, as if waiting for her to answer it, knowing she was inside. It would be all too easy for him to simply tear the door from it's hinges, but he did not. He was patient, polite, even The thought infuriated her so much a snarl rippled across her face.. She’d never appreciated his games, and yet he still insisted..

Padding across the floor, silently, in her sheer robe, she gently plucked a rifle from her couch where she’d rested it earlier. Eva would love to see how well he insisted when she pumped his fragile human body full of lead. It wouldn’t kill him.. but he’d think twice before gracing her threshold again in such a fragile form, without claws and teeth ready... if he were lucky enough to find her again. Eva never made the same mistake twice. It would be the last time Lucien ever dared tread upon her sanctuary.. Her home.

Approaching the door warily, as if it would splinter into pieces at any moment, she lifted the gun to her shoulder, and tilted her head. It was then he spoke out, and his voice froze her into place, hands squeezing the metal of the gun in reflex.“I heard you singing,” She bared her teeth at the door, knowing he could not see, but feeling fury wash over her all the same. Damn right he’d heard her.. Singing the song of war. It had been full of loathing, hatred, betrayal. It should have warned him away, but instead he’d followed it like a fool.

“As if.. as if it were the song of my soul.” His voice lilted, baritone breaking only slightly, as if he were suddenly in a great deal of pain, as if the centuries had worn his heart and battered his soul. Like a lost lover finally returning home.

Eva's blood ran cold.. The pain in those words, the memories in that single phrase, threatened to bring her to her knees. Her grip on the gun tightened ever-more, bending the metal, cutting into it as if it were made of tin foil. Suddenly she was there. She could feel the dirt under her bare feet, and the quiet of the forest, the rustle of the trees and her white dress as he’d landed before her. His golden scales glittered in their majesty, wings stretched so far he nearly blocked out the moonlight. She’d sung for him then, too, a very different song. A song so full of love, longing, of fulfillment and desire; he had been the answer to her every wish. He'd spoken of songs and souls tenderly before carrying her off into the night.

Now, Lucien dared use those tender words against her.. Mocking her..

Throwing the gun into the floor, it shattered into it’s various pieces as she roared her anger. The pain and absolute anguish in her made itself known in a clarity she never wanted to feel again. Ripping the door from it’s place, she launched at him like the animal she was. Sinking her claws as far into the material of his suit as she could, she hoped that she scored his flesh. The wolf violently shoved him into the far wall so hard the sheet rock buckled around him. Keeping her hold, she pressed every inch of strength she had into his chest, as if bound and determined to have him suffocate there before her.

"How dare you!” she snarled, bringing him forward and slamming him back into the wall. It took every ounce of control in her body, not to sink her teeth into the tender flesh of his neck. The prickle of tears in the corner of her eyes, only made her angrier, even as she knew he would be more than delighted to see them. “How dare you approach my home! My territory! And mock me with those words!” Eva would kill him. Would destroy every piece of his existence so he would never come to haunt her again.
