Rynu is a very solitary personality, with a significant aversion to social interactions, particularly in large groups, and is extremely selective in his friends. Part of this is due to his past involvement with a cult known as the Dark Brotherhood, a group that sought to use magic for evil purposes, primarily in blood-, tattoo-, and bond-magic to trap and manipulate unsuspecting adolescents to provide power for the head of the cult, Isildre. At one time, being an outcast from his own kind for the dark undercurrent in his magic for using it to kill his abusive father, Rynu was angry enough at the world that this group seemed perfect for him; they would teach him to use and control his magic, an education that had been denied to him by his old clan, and in return, he would serve them for life. There were other benefits espoused, of course, but this was the gist of it.

He got out, eventually, and used his knowledge to bring the Brotherhood down, but he will forever bear the mental and physical scars wrought by the experience. Far from paternalistic, he still tries, in his gruff way, to steer the younger dragons of the clan towards good, moral paths, and he will never deny anyone the right to learn magic, as his clan once did to him.

ADOPTED FAMILY
Rynu was informally adopted by a livestock keeper by the name of Conintor when he was in his early teens, although by the time he joined the Brotherhood, he felt trapped by the social stigma associated with his past.

CURSED TATTOOS
When he joined the Brotherhood, Rynu was given a cursed tattoo that allowed Isildre to take over his mind and body. This was one of the reasons that Rynu cut ties with Conintor, his cousin Pheona, and Marina, because he feared that Isildre would use them against him to teach him a lesson.

MARINA
Marina is quite a bit younger than Rynu, apprenticed extraordinarily early to a lightning mage in the same clan that Pheona was sent to. It took him a long time to realize how much she meant to him, and even longer to realize that she loved him just as fiercely. He owes her everything; his life, his sanity, and his heart.
