______Irene is the Clan Leader. Even though she may seem cold and reserved at first, the position suits her perfectly. She's fiercely loyal to those close to her, especially her family. The clan deeply respects her dedication and follow her unquestionably for it. What most of the clan members don't know is, that this isn't just a normal personality trait, it's a vow that she made long ago on the day that changed her life.

When she was little, her father took her out on an out of region gathering mission before she was of age, it was just supposed to be a normal outing, something that's done by every clan in Sorneith, but things went horribly wrong. Irene and her father got separated from the group, but they didn't notice until they were far out of sight, and that's when things took a turn for the worst. They were flying along the border of Lightning and Fire and were just about to turn around when balls of lava started flying at them from Fire. They noticed too late and they were both sent flying into the Shifting Sands. When Irene woke up, her father was lying there, severally burned and dying, he had shielded her from the attack, she was too small to carry him and getting the others for help would take to long, so all she could do was watch as her father died.

As Irene lay beside her injured father, she asked, "Why did you save me?" and all he said was, "Once your older and you have a family of your own, you'll know. For you and all the others who are dear to me to learn the answer to that question on your own, that is my final wish!" Unfortunately, most of the clan members didn't know the answer and they would constantly blame Irene for her father's death, she lived for years with this torment while vowing to learn the answer, not knowing that she had already did. This vow caused her to leave the clan and set out to start a family leading her to the life she has know.

She has come to realize that she knew the answer all along, love and loyalty, those were the things her father wished for her to know and upholding them is the only thing that brings her peace from the nightmares of her father's death and the torment she faced in her old clan.

“Shad, dear, what are we ever going to do about this...this calamity?”

“This what-now?”

“Abomination, dear. Monstrosity. This blight upon Sornieth. You get the idea.”

“Irene,” Shad said, striding over to where his mate stood fretting in the corner, “it’s just a hatchling.”

“A male hatchling!” The alpha of the nascent Skyfire Legion jabbed a talon at a baby Skydancer, still soggy from hatching. “And the firstborn too! Is this the Shadowbinder’s idea of a joke? Have I faltered somewhere in my worship, Shad? Why else would She curse me so?"

“I really fail to see why this is a problem.”

“I love you dear, truly, but this is no time for jokes. My heir can’t be a male. I won’t allow it! Not after Sierra!”

“Ah. Sierra again.”

“Don’t you ‘Sierra again’ me! What he did was unforgivable, and you know it. You know what I always say. ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me’. Who’s to say this male won’t inherit his bad blood?”

“Genetics works a little differently, dear.”

“Hilarious, truly. That’s why I married you, Shad. For your razor wit and charm."

"There are two other eggs, you know.” Shad indicated two cracking, trembling eggs beside the early hatcher. “You could always make one of them the heir instead.”

“Shad, dear, you know I have my…wait, that’s genius. Shad, you beautiful beast! That’s it!”

The Imperial rolled his eyes. “Glad I could contribute, then.”

*

“Now, now, Thly, play nice…oh, Shad, aren’t they just adorable when they’re playing together?”

“I decline to comment,” Shad said, burying himself in his pile of reports and paperwork.

“Our very first brood! Just think. One of these little hatchlings will someday take the reins of the Skyfire Legion!”

The Imperial risked a peek over his desk. Two Skydancers and one Imperial wrestled across the floor, making little growling noises and batting at each other with blunt talons. The Imperial, Thly, was the youngest, but also the largest, thanks to her father’s blood. The middle daughter Hykra was like a little bundle of feathers beside her, and then...there was the male. Ajke, they’d named him. They didn’t speak of him much. That was just asking for Irene to launch into another flashback moment.

Hykra crouched, giving away her position by giggling, and pounced on Thly. Her little claws slid off the Imperial’s pelt, and Thly batted at her, which with her size translated more into a slap. Hykra rolled across the floor, but with the resilience of a hatchling, scrambled to her feet and crouched again.

Ajke, not wanting to miss out on the excitement, leapt into the fray, bowling Hykra over.

“NO! OFF!”

Irene moved so fast that even Shad blinked twice. She swatted Ajke away, sending him flying a few feet. He hit the floor with a tiny ‘oof’, and his sisters stopped to stare at him.

“Playtime’s over,” she said, getting that unfocused look in her eyes again. “Go to your rooms. Now."

*

“A Malevolent Spirit, on our border…troubling news. Thank you for telling me, SilverBlade. Yes, I hope you find Crystallia too…we simply can’t let this beast wander around…”

The little Fae bowed his head before ducking out of the room.

“I swear I saw Crystallia earlier,” Shad said. “Mentoring Hykra.”

“How peculiar. I haven’t seen my beautiful heiress around either…”

Shad reached for an amour case, where his old sword lay waiting for action. “I could always deal with it myself, like the good old days.”

“Oh! Do you remember that Undying Featherback we killed together? Truly a bonding experience, fighting for your life alongside your love.”

Whatever Shad was going to say was cut off by voices just outside their office.

“…Oh, I insist, madam. My parents are sooo busy right now. I’m sure it’s nothing. Probably a rat problem again! You know how mother is about that pantry…"

“Thank you, Ajke, but I’d really prefer to hear it from the lady herself.”

“Crystallia!” Irene crossed the room and flung the door open, revealing Ajke just about blocking the doorway with his body, with the silvery Guardian just behind.

“Lady Irene!” Crystallia nudged Ajke aside and bowed low. “I heard some sort of commotion all over the castle. What’s going on?”

“Didn’t SilverBlade tell you? There’s a Shadetouched Spirit on the northern border!”

Ajke flinched. Crystallia’s jaw dropped. “No! That’s not what your son told me. He said there was a water leak in the basement!”

Irene froze. Shad knew this stillness; it was deadly. “Go deal with the monster,” he said to Crystallia, who saluted and took off down the corridor. “And you, I hope you have a good explanation for this.”

“Liar!” Irene snarled, raising a talon that began to pulse with Shadow magic. “Traitor! I knew it!”

Ajke flattened himself against the ground. “I’m sorry, mother, Hykra made me…”

“Hykra! What have you done to her, you worm?”

Shad laid a claw on his mate’s back, and locked eyes with Ajke, the son he had never before dared to acknowledge. “Tell the truth, please.”

“A-alright. Hykra heard the news about the beast, and she wanted to go after it. She wanted to impress you. So she asked me to distract Crystallia so she could kill it herself…”

Irene stared at a point somewhere beyond Ajke. “Kill the beast…kill…”

Shad whispered in her ear. “Crystallia is on her way. She’ll make sure Hykra comes to no harm.”

“Yes…of course…Shad, dear, release your chokehold on me.”

It wasn’t a chokehold, Shad thought. But he released her anyway.

It was like he’d let go of a jack-in-the-box. Irene sprang at her son with corrosive claws, screeching like a devil possessed. Shad pulled her off at once, but the damage was done; Ajke screamed as a long purple wound burrowed into his flesh.

“You swayed her! You sent her to her death! You want her dead! You want ME dead! I see through you, Sierra! You’ll pay a thousand times for your sins!”

Shad held onto her. “Sierra is dead! You’re living in the past. You just attacked your own son!”

“He’s not my son! Release me, Shad!”

“No.” A decade of trying to ignore the problem culminated in this single word. “Ajke…it may be best for you to…leave. In exile. Take what you need, but never return here, on pain of death.”

Ajke was still hissing in pain, but he looked into his father’s eyes and nodded. He staggered to his feet and vanished down the corridor.

With him out of the way, Shad closed the door with his back leg and escorted Irene back to her usual seat. There was the thousand-yard-stare in her eyes again, as it had been throughout the entire melee.

“We trusted him,” she said. “And he tried to kill us.”

“I know, dear. But you let a long-dead statue control your life decades into the future. Do you really wish to give him that honour?”

“No. Sierra deserves no honour.”

“Then you have to stop seeing him in others. Let the memory fade.”

“I can forget. But I can’t forgive.”

“Then that is not forgetting at all.”

Shad called for a cadet to bring him some water, and he stood by his mate until the focus returned to her eyes.

“That snake is gone at last. Good riddance.”

“Lady Irene!” a pagedragon hollered. “Crystallia has returned! And she brought Hykra with her!”

“Oh, thank the Shadowbinder!” Irene perked up in her seat. “Where are they? The healer’s? I’m just pining to see my daughter again!”

She hurried out of the room, and Shad followed behind her, wondering whether he had truly done the right thing.
