Biography

wrote:
Poisoned wine, slit throats, shallow graves. No action is without purpose. The soft hush of feathers brushing against scale and fur. Sleeping powder concealed in a hollow jewel embedded in a ring, a honey-sweet smile in the gloom, a letter describing mistruths and dark secrets. A single rose petal flutters to the floor and comes to rest in a bed of thorns; if this empire is to crumble, it will be by her hand.
By shanncrafter
A rose by any other name...

“...would still be a better alpha than that unstable witch on the throne,” said the ornately-dressed Skydancer, with a roll of her eyes.

Rose sat before a hanging mirror in her bedroom, primping herself up with jewellery and satin. A dark golden boa constrictor slithered up beside her, holding a brooch in her jaws. She picked it up and pinned it to her collar.

“A wonderful choice, Basil,” she purred, running her talons along the snake’s back.

Someone knocked on the door. “Are you still in there, Rose?” said the muffled voice of Crystallia. “We’re starting in three minutes!”

“Yes, I’m almost done! Don’t come--”

The lock clicked and the door swung open, revealing the stylish Guardian in a much fancier dress than usual.

“--in.”

“Oh, Rose, darling, you look fine as you are! Now come on, it won’t reflect well if the alpha’s daughter were late to her own debutante ball!”

‘Silly me. How could I possibly miss a chance to be slavered over by airheaded males?’ “If you think so. You know best, after all.”

“Of course I do, dear; I’ve been dressing your family for decades!”

A calico cat poked his head out of a pile of rejected dresses. He bounded over to Rose and leapt between her shoulders, settling himself comfortably in her clothes.

“Oh. Are you bringing your, err, pets...again?”

“Of course. Loki and Basil will help me beat back any mean suitors, won’t you, sweeties?”

Loki purred in agreement. Basilisk flicked out her tongue.

“...Right. Come along now, dear. The ball’s just about starting!”

*

The Skyfire Legion always threw the most elaborate coming-out parties. For Hykra’s party, they’d invited a flying squadron to paint the heiress’s name in the sky. For Thly’s, they’d ordered an entire roasted uniwhale for the banquet. Rose’s was a little more subtle, it seemed, with a rainbow’s variety of fresh roses hung from the walls, along the floor, and arranged in bouquets on the furniture. There was the same assortment of allied clans and young suitors that attended every party, but this time, they bowed low when Rose strolled into the ballroom.

She inclined her head back to them. ‘Now this, this I could get used to.’

“Right on time, dear,” Irene said, fluttering down from her balcony table. “Now I know you’re not the biggest fan of speaking to males…”

“You would know, of course,” Rose replied.

A frown crossed Irene’s snout. “No, well-- anyway! Just take this as an opportunity to test the waters. Thly can give you some tips on what to look for.”

“Hey, sis,” the Imperial waved from her seat two floors up. “If he starts asking you about our family fortune, dump him. If the only thing he can say is ‘you’re pretty’, move on. If you beat him in a sparring match, he’s not worth your time.”

“And, if none of them catch your eye, there’s always next year’s Trickmurk Circus gala.”

“Good point,” Rose said, readjusting her diadem. “Who knows, maybe we’ll see Ajke there.”

With that, she disappeared into the throng, clutching her companions close to her chest.

“Evening, milady.” A Wildclaw in a suit approached her. “Would you care to dance?”

Rose looked at Loki. He yawned widely, showing perfectly-brushed white fangs.

“No, thanks,” she said, and moved on.

There was a cloth-covered table set to one side, stacked with canapes. Rose went down the row, picking up two of each and popping them in her mouth, offering a few to Basilisk and Loki.

“You have quite the appetite, there,” said a Fae who’d popped up from behind the centrepiece. “Would you like to chat over a plate or two?”

She lifted up her right talon. Basilisk, who had been twined around her arm like a bracelet, shook her head.

“No, thanks.”

She piled a few more snacks on a plate and went off to the side.

High above her head, she heard the thundering of wingbeats. She looked up in time to see Shad leaning over the balustrade, folding his wings against his back.

“Irene thinks this is a good time to begin the mixer dance. So, pick a partner, I suppose.”

From some hidden alcove, an invisible orchestra struck up a slow waltz. The ballroom came alive in a scramble of feathers and feet as dragons rushed to find a partner.

Rose sidestepped the flailing mass and ate a few more of her canapes. Loki hissed softly, alerting her to an approaching Coatl.

“Heellew,” he said, his words garbled by his strong natural Coatl-hum. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Waant to partner?”

“Tough decision,” Rose remarked. “No.”

His crest fell. “Is...is it theee accent? Know I’m not the best...”

“It isn’t you personally. I’m just trying to make a point to mother that--”

“Rose!”

‘The Great Tyrant descends into the fray,’ the young heiress thought, as Irene swooped down from above.

“Rosetta Zephyra Skyfire, what in Sornieth are you doing? Why are you being so aloof at your own debut?”

The alpha wrung her talons, attracting the attention of nearby dancers. “You’re a daughter of Skyfire. It’s your duty to cement ties with our allies. I know you hate dances, and I know you hate other dragons, but just for once, stop being so selfish and do what you’re told!”

Rose snarled, and Basilisk reared up from her shoulders, baring her fangs. “Selfish? SELFISH? Look who’s talking! The mother who exiled her own son because of her raging paranoia?”

Irene trembled with rage. She lifted a talon, then seemed to remember the guests staring, and lowered it. “Ajke was a traitor and a criminal, just like his uncle. He swayed your sister to her death ten years ago. Hykra almost died!”

From high above them, Irene’s oldest daughter hid her face behind a silken fan.

“And there it is again. Sierra. Always Sierra. Don’t you ever get tired of talking about old statue dust?”

“How dare you!” The glassy-eyed blankness returned to Irene’s face. The invisible orchestra stuttered, and more dragons turned to stare at the shouting.

“I try and try and try to give my daughters a good life. I’ve sacrificed and made countless decisions that broke my heart. And this is how they repay me?”

“We’re not perfect little dolls you can manipulate any way you want to. It’s like you think Ajke’ll come back and kill us if we’re not back in our toyboxes by curfew. Maybe Sierra didn’t kill you that day, but something died in you, alright.”

Irene launched herself so suddenly that even Loki couldn’t warn her. She swiped at Rose’s face, pushing her daughter back a few steps, screeching like a Talonok the whole time. A ruffle of black descended from above, and Shad wrapped his enormous wings around his wife, muffling her screams. “Rose! Did she hurt you? Shall I call a healer?”

“No, it’s okay, I’m fine,” Rose stumbled to a table to feel at her snout, but beneath her talons, she was smiling.

“Irene needs to go somewhere quiet so I can calm her down. Do try to enjoy the rest of the evening.” Shad’s equanimity was admirable, especially considering almost every dragon was staring at them. With one talon on Irene’s shoulder, he guided the wide-eyed, tense-muscled Skydancer out of the ballroom, pulling the doors shut behind them with his tail.

The silence and mood that followed wasn’t just damp, it was dripping with awkwardness. A few clan representatives offered their sympathies to Rose, which she accepted with solemn grace.

“Wow,” Thly called, breaking the uncomfortable silence. “I think you just won the record for most interesting debut all century. Congrats, lil sis!”

Her remarks prompted a few polite chuckles, and in no time at all, the guests were mingling among themselves again.

As for Rose herself, she’d excused herself to an opposite balcony, whose owners had vacated to join the conversations below.

“Well, that went absolutely terrible,” Rose remarked to her pets. “Exactly as planned. Wouldn’t you agree, my darlings?”

“Another grain ticks from the hourglass,” Basilisk hissed, in a rattling, breathy voice.

“Strike one in the eyes of her admirers,” Loki purred.

“Three strikes and she’s out,” Rose concluded, and set down another canape for them to eat.

'axis begins by bowing slightly, even. 'marble inlaid with gold. conspiratal laughs between two people who trust each other. a girl's arm slung over another's shoulders. puff pastry and rose water and filet mignon, dishes rich in price and taste both. the slight ache behind your eyes when you roll them too often. an elegant dagger handle, inlaid with mother-of-pearl.'
