lore notes:
- they/them
- an experimental vessel of the Shade created during the first age, through which the force fought against the first eight deities and their elements
- feeds on ambient elemental energy. while their form generally remains solid enough to conceal this to the average dragon, a well-trained eye for magic may look past it and see a dark silhouette outlined by sparking light, its violent consumption creating a glow about their body.
- late in the conflict, the edges of the Shade, tainted somewhat with the same elemental vitality it had been fighting, had branched off and grown desperate to secure a victory, resorting to mimicry of the deities' first attempts at dragons in an attempt to undermine their power
- later abandoned in a hasty retreat and left to find life among draconic society
- after the shade's withdrawal, azhal's form began to dissipate when not willed to hold together, losing its solidity and much of any power it once may have held. unable to to bind this will to much else, they continued to perform their duty and set back the deities' machinations where they could, flickering and unstable all the while. later, as dragons began to step foot onto the planet, their duties expanded to things like sowing doubt among those faithful to the deities, or unraveling the plans of newly formed clans.
- it was this latter work that managed to settle azhal's form into what it is now, into dark scales stained by both magical residue and the material (or rather, lack thereof) that they are made of. turns out having to form your own sense of identity is very good for your sense of independence, and they eventually began to stop acting on what they perceived as the shade's whims and more on their own
