Only a single egg occupied the wintry nest, rocking back and forth as something within it shifted and clawed at the icy shell enclosing it. After several days, pieces began to chip off, collecting at the egg's base. A hooked claw reached through the new hole, soon replaced by a single, curious eye. The eye was white as the snow itself, rolling as it tried to see more of this new world.

Several more hours passed, and a small, squared head poked out of the egg, soon followed by a clumsy hatchling. It chirped and growled, floundering about in the snow coating the nest of dried boughs.

The chick's distressed cries brought the attention of a mother. Towering above him, the newly-hatched dragon could not make out her features, but she smelled of home and that was what mattered. The dragoness scooped him from the nest, setting him on the slippery ice. He gave a squeak of protest as his legs collapsed, leaving him splayed upon the chilly ground.

His mother leaned down and put her great head near him. She licked the snow from his form, her breath warming him. He was mesmerized by her furious eyes, glowing orange as though flames burnt behind them—not, of course, that the hatchling had knowledge of fire.

Jǫkull is an Old Norse name meaning "ice, icicle, glacier"
