Helix Warrior, Survivor —– Helix joined the Clan of the Dancing Devils as a young trainee, back when the clan was a prosperous fixture of the Wind domain. Life was good in the clan; everyone was treated fairly, the leaders were just and approachable, and everyone had enough to eat and a comfortable place to call home. Helix was an eager, hard-working recruit with a good attitude, who showed promise as a warrior. He got along well with everyone, stood out in training exercises, and before long he had several new friends and a cozy little lair to call his own. He even caught the eye of a pretty skydancer, a fellow warrior named Asherah who had just taken over as Captain of the Guard for the clan. Before long Helix was chosen to train with the clan's leader, Ravel, as his replacement for Master-at-Arms, training the new recruits to fight and protect the clan and their lands. Helix was thrilled at the appointment. He settled down with Asherah as his mate and for a long time everything seemed to be... well, perfect. That... probably should have been their clue, in retrospect. Vorean was a pearlcatcher from the Scarred Wasteland who, along with a small band of followers, requested asylum with the Dancing Devils. He made everyone uneasy, but Ravel had no solid reason to deny the request and so the newcomers were allowed to stay and settle in with the clan. Unbeknownst to the Dancing Devils, Vorean was a powerful warlord from the Plague domain with his own agenda. The attack didn't come right away. Vorean laid low, biding his time until the clan was at its weakest due to unrelated interpersonal issues. It was the middle of the night when he finally made his move, calling in reinforcements from outside the clan's lair. Ravel ordered the clan to evacuate, and charged Helix to protect the fleeing dragons and his own mate, Descry. Asherah stayed with Ravel to fight the intruders and to buy the rest of the clan time. Helix and Descry led the clan across the border into Shadow territory, where they could hide in the Tangled Wood and wait for their loved ones to join them. Ravel returned to the clan battered and poisoned, half-dead. Asherah didn't return at all. Grief left Helix numb. The rest of the clan tried to comfort him, of course, but he couldn't swallow the mountain of platitudes. Asherah had died to protect the innocent. She'd died a hero. What did Helix care? She was dead. She was gone and he was alone. He stayed with the clan just long enough for them to regroup and get settled into the Shadow lands and then left, determined to leave behind everything that reminded him of life with Asherah. It was so much easier just to forget. —–
