━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Regius cleared away a pile of tumbled rocks. With a scrape of one huge paw, he sent them thudding and clacking away into the darkness. His companion descended behind him a bit more gracefully. As the two of them stood blinking in the gloom, letting their eyes adjust, Rhian's nostrils flared. "I smell water."

They could now hear it: a faint lapping noise, all but obscured by the scrape and whine of toiling dragons' claws. Above them, their other three lairmates were working to expand their home. Perhaps in time, this collection of rocky ground and crags would be home to a mighty clan....But for now, it was just the three of them.
"I'll go check if the walls are sound. You ought to investigate that water. It might be useful." And with that, Rhian slunk away, her tail waving slowly. She blended seamlessly into the shadows; the only way Regius could tell for certain where she was was by looking for her eyes. Fire-orange eyes, shining like brilliant points of flame.

He moved forward. Some meters away from the slope of tumbled rocks, the light ended, and shadows roofed his head. But his eyes had adjusted enough now. He was standing at the edge of a long, deep pool. It was odd, and clearly not natural: it looked as though someone had cut an enormous block of stone out of the floor and then filled the space up with icy water. The pool stretched into the blackness.

Regius looked to the left. He could see Rhian's head bobbing as she tapped the walls with her claws, tested them with her shoulders or tail. Like it or not, he had a responsibility, too. Icy water closed over him as he submerged, but he didn't feel the cold. Ice dragons generally didn't.

The pool wasn't deep enough to close over his head, and he walked easily along the bottom. It sloped a bit as he moved forward. He could hear a distant trickling noise now -- the water was flowing in from somewhere. Or perhaps it was flowing out....

It came from a great crack in the far wall. Regius felt twisted pipes, long broken by the force of some great earthquake. Icy water gushed into the pool. It stank -- not of stale air, not even of algae or fish. No, this water smelled of steel, and there was something else...like the air just before rain....

As he turned to investigate further, something brushed against his shoulder. He squinted, trying to see what it was, even as Rhian called out to him, "Regius, I've finished here. Everything looks sound. How are things on your end?"

"We have fresh water," he reported. He bumped into the thing again, poked it with his tail. "It's coming from pipes in the wall."

"Is it potable?"

"It stinks. I don't like how it smells."

Rhian let out a snort of gentle contempt. "I'd look, but it's much too cold for me. Ah...I'll let the terraformer know about it. He'll be interested, and he can have a look for himself." And then she went away. She appeared in the shaft of light leading down from above, startlingly black against the brightness, and she lifted herself easily and climbed out of the mattamore. Regius was left in the cool underground, and now he felt around with his forepaws.

He was standing next to a chest. A great box of steel, crackling with energy...literally crackling. Regius yelped as it stung him. He snatched his paw back, put it in his mouth. The water was cool and clean, but it still had that weird taste. "Ozone," he realized then. "It smells like a thunderstorm."

It took some doing, hauling the chest out of the water by himself. He pushed it to the side of the pool and managed to heave it onto the stone floor. It slammed down with a solid clank. Regius waited, glancing back to see if anybody had heard. Nobody was there, but it wouldn't be long until Rhian came back with the clan architect. In the meantime, the chest was worth investigating.

It crackled underneath his paws, currents of energy writhing up the sides. Had the light been any better, Regius would have noticed the cracks snaking through the metal and the ominous black sheen spreading out from them....But he didn't. He couldn't pry the lid open, and so he decided to break it. He stepped back, giving himself room, and slammed down his tail in a single massive blow.

The chest blasted open, grimy pieces falling away and splashing into the pool. Its contents were quite different: long pieces of gleaming metal, polished almost to a mirror shine. Regius bent over them curiously. He poked one of them with a talon and then pressed a paw to the surface. It was warm.

In that instant, bright white lights flared along the metal pieces. Regius, bathed in the sudden brilliance, turned away. For a moment, he saw the fully-illuminated cavern: tiers of platforms set along the walls, the clear spaces of which had been decorated with figures. Strange beings...two arms, two legs, and no wings. A stray thought drifted into Regius' mind: Long ago when the world was young...

Something tremendous slammed into his back, bearing him to the stone floor. The light grew brighter and brighter....It would have blinded him, he felt, if he had not lost consciousness then. A cold, invisible hand seemed to close suddenly around him, driving the breath from his body. For several moments, he knew nothing, felt nothing.

He drifted back into wakefulness, like a fish rising gently to the light. He was drawn from the darkness by whispers, snatches of song. Long ago when the world was young...

...a new age, they said. Welcome to the new age...

...it was a tough competition, but I am glad to be here...

Competitors! To your places...

It will be the power that supports the world--

--if it doesn't annihilate it first.

The world around him exploded into noise: someone was crashing down, plunging through the water that'd closed over Regius' head. Startled, he took a deep breath and inhaled -- and he was being dragged up, water pouring from his throat, his lungs. He was set on the stone floor and Polosim, the architect, was about to give him a smack on the back when he and Rhian noticed something.

The pieces of metal that had flown from the chest no longer lay on the floor. They had leaped up, crackling with electricity and light, and sunk themselves deep into Regius' back. Polosim instinctively tried to pry them off, but Regius reacted with a yell of pain, and so he desisted.

While Rhian and the architect babbled to Regius, asking him to tell them what'd gone wrong, he looked around. The world seemed wreathed in white light, but only at the edges of his vision. He could see the paintings on the walls, and he could hear...If paintings had voices, then he could hear them now. They drifted through his mind like bubbles through the waves. If he concentrated, he could pick out a phrase here, a word there, as if he were walking through a crowd. The white bulbs along his length glowed in response.

Polosim went looking for the pieces of the metal chest. He picked up some of them, but the potent magic that'd charged them had gone, and they were nothing more than dead lumps of steel now.

The clan grew, as Regius had guessed it would. More dragons joined them, and Polosim was kept busy, widening the hallways and rooms of the lair. Regius himself deigned to stay in the underground cavern, where the world was not so bright, and where the whispers of the past were at their most soothing. He sank into the dark waters, sleeping soundly and deeply. Only the orbs glowing upon his body, and the occasional stray bubble, showed where he was.

With their lairmates so busy with making the place habitable, it was Rhian who stepped up to care for Regius. She nursed him through his exhaustion, and coaxed him to eat when all he wanted to do was sleep. Regius had to admit that he did miss the sun and having other dragons to talk to, but with Rhian around, things weren't so bad....She had her reasons, too, for staying with him in their cool and dark underworld. By the time the clan was established, they were a mated pair.

Occasionally a curious visitor would be ushered into the darkness. They would be guided to the edge of the pool, where with a gurgling rumble Regius would raise himself, sending water crashing in waves against the stone floor. The more timid visitors would try to flee at this point, scrambling back over untidy piles of stone, while Regius would blink at them in consternation.

"What? You're here for the art, aren't you? Or maybe it's the lore. What's it going to be, then -- lore or art?"
