Nix

Truly's apprentice in the culinary arts, accepted on account of her really good banana bread (even though it was the only thing she could make, it's really good).

Thanks to diligent practice has progressed to the creation of buttermilk, sour cream and yogurt and the recipes those call for, and is really looking forward to the time she'll graduate to main dishes like kimchi and lutefisk.

Frequently mixes consonants into words like acovado or adikcent, especially when excited or talking fast, though it has surprisingly little impact on her intelligibilty.

Despite learning to count the same way as any other hatchling, thinks of all numbers from a base of four. Four is the number. If she taps out a random beat or pulls out a bunch of items then stops to actually count it will always be a multiple/fraction of four. Two is half four, eight is double four, ten is double-and-half four. Awkward numbers like seven or thirteen that have to be left hanging like that just aren't finished.

Has a pet stoat named Nibbs, which proved awkward when she and Truly got to Wanderin where one of the dragons in residence has the same name. Terror dubbed her pet Peanut Butter Nibbs, and it's now known as Pibbs. (And Nix is inventing peanut butter banana bread, which is really super good.)

Her other pet stoats used to be named Tibbs and Honey, but after she renamed the first one she changed the others to Toffee Chip Nibbs and Crunchy Honey Nibbs with Tibbs and Cribbs for short so they match.

They're not great pets honestly, but Nix was entranced by furry wingless noodlets tiny enough to fit in her hands and mamma didn't show up for them for a whole day and they were hungry so, well...

They're still tiny, but they don't seem to know it—anything up to cat-sized they see and think 'KILL', and they don't know the difference between think and act. The only thing that foils their pounce-on-the-back-of-the-neck-and-bite move is turtleneck sweaters.

When their jaws latch into fuzz instead of blood they hang on, curl up and snuggle. So Nix keeps a three-necked plushie (they don't share well) for catching and carrying them safely. Wiggle it around like prey, hold still long enough for them to pounce, then move the plushie while they're attached.

They're even more trouble to babysit for deliveries as they got banned from going along after they discovered what kind of food (er, 'food') is available in the Mouse Cafe. Sobe was not amused to have to upgrade the keep-cats-out security to include predators even smaller than some of the mice.

The lair cats are plotty-but-patient about finding a way in. The stoats are bloody-minded whole-heartedly dedicated... when they're close enough to realize they're in the vicinity. And aren't already hunting the cats (that would eat them) or other small wildlife or customers' pastries. And their noses aren't full of textile fuzz. (So. No deliveries is safest all around. And also Truly made it a Rule.)

Although they want to help Nix bake whenever their namesakes are involved, sugar is bad for animals so they can only have teeny slivers for special occasions. Honeybees are okay though. (Except the honeybees Truly had clearly marked 'Ingredients - no nibbling,' Nix...)

Nix really really really really wanted to commemorate when the skycat migration came through, but banana bread was just too soft to hold a shape so she had to use the sourdough starter Truly was making her learn bread-bread baking with (because well-rounded education).

And it worked! She made loafcats! Good enough to eat and sell! (Truly only has to help with all the fiddly parts.)

She kind of hates them. They're way more popular than banana bread.

This is an awful pillow. It looks like candy but does not taste like candy.

Got a feather charm for best bread (by her!) because obviously there's nothing better to spend a wish on.

(With a toad because there wasn't a banana charm but the toad looks like a loaf... and is really nice and squeezy to gnaw on.)

...And another feather charm with all the soft things because they're really good to pet and frizzle and mash between her fingers when she's not making banana bread.

(And not supposed to be chewing anything which can be really hard not to do when things smell good so a distraction really helps.)
