Nine Inch Nails - The Becoming

Cygnus was never much of a reader, but there wasn't anything else they could do if they wanted this crucial information. Some farmers in a rural part of the Western City came forth speaking of weird mindless husks with the shape of dragons that attacked and were chased off by guards after. Despite their injuries and the eyewitness accounts, the majority of dragons including the sovereign, Shadarsia, weren't convinced. They figured it was just some hostile group in the Tangled Wood and nothing out of the ordinary. But the Ridgeback felt the need to get to the bottom of it if they wanted to stop the threat.

Information on the strange dragons was limited in the Midnight Seclusion. Even the capital's library didn't have much about them. Cygnus dug through so many books that might've had something to say, but alas they found nothing. Were they really searching for nothing? Or were they doing something wrong?

"Oh, greetings, aren't you one of the capital guards?"

Cygnus craned their head to look behind them, spotting a tall brightly-colored Imperial, none other than the Ice ambassador Tundra.

"Yes, my lady," Cygnus replied, dipping their head and giving her their full attention. "Is there something you need?"

"Just visiting some friends," Tundra answered. "Is there something you're looking for? I can ask Zenara for it when she comes back."

Cygnus nodded. "Recently we got reports on these dragons that didn't seem to think and had black chitin on their bodies. I'm trying to find out more about them."

"Ah," Tundra seemed to ponder for a moment. "Actually, I remember hearing about a scientist in the capital a long time ago who spoke of 'hivemind' dragons. My great aunt who lived here told me about it, and he claimed they turned dragons like us into mindless creatures."

That caught Cygnus' interest. "Really? How did he find that out?"

"Imagination," the Imperial stated bluntly, her expression changing to an unamused eyeroll. "Flimsy proof and outrageous claims. It's not a hivemind, it's probably some savages terrorizing other lands. It's just some conspiracy that this so-called 'scientist' made up to make everybody fall into a panic and worsen the situation."

That conclusion wasn't at all what Cygnus wanted to hear. It just sounded like the old Ice dragon was hiding something, or maybe she was refusing to care just so it's easier to handle the citizens and their concerns. Holding back an irritated scowl, they lowered their head. "Isn't it reasonable to find out just what we're dealing with?"

"We should focus on matters that hold more importance," Tundra said, dismissively. "We'll have more guards around the clan, but we should deal with the threat when they show themselves and not before. It's too early to take too much action."

So this isn't important enough to you? the Ridgeback thought in frustration. What if they grow into a bigger threat while we sit and wait?

"Anyway, if that's what you're looking for, I'll ask Zenara. I don't know if you'll find what you need. But she's the boss, so don't take my word for it." The pastel Imperial elegantly left after nodding respectfully. Cygnus watched her go, disappointed but not surprised.

Well... if nobody believes me or wants to help, then I'll have to do things myself if I want to get anything done.

Wherever those creatures were, they'd find them during their next patrol near clan grounds. They would confirm if the rumors were true, and once they figured out what those things were, they'd be able to go from there. Besides, they knew they were strong enough to handle themselves. Shadarsia didn't promote them to the capital guard position for nothing, after all. They have been praised countless times for their victories. They had so many admirers and friends. They got to be associated with the clan's highest authorities. What could they not do?

Everything went wrong.

While spying on a group of those alleged figures that they really had to dig around to find in the first place, they were ambushed. The Ridgeback didn't expect there to be so many of them. They were powerful and adept at combat, and yet somehow, they couldn't even manage to flee the swarm until it was too late. At least they were able to flee at all after their transformation, but the last few hours were just a blur of unimaginable pain.

Nothing about their body felt right anymore. When they found a body of water to look at their reflection, their violet eyes widened in horror. Their blue patterned scales were replaced by pitch black chitinous plates that seemed to be underdeveloped. In the spaces between each plate, a tar-like substance that smelled of oil oozed down their transformed body and fell on the dirt below. Their wings were in far worse condition, though. The webbing between the "fingers" was still present, but dripping with black sludge. Whatever was supposed to grow there apparently didn't, or it turned out to be further from developed than the rest of their body. Unfamiliar extra appendages extended from their flanks, surprisingly mobile despite appearances. Without counting the wings or tail, Cygnus now had eight limbs, like a spider. A gargantuan spider, and the ugliest one alive at that.

Cygnus didn't expect to have their entire body ruined that day. They looked around wildly and called for help, ready to continue running if necessary.

But nobody came.

They wandered, lost in the murky woodlands, shouting fruitlessly for anyone who can offer guidance.

Nobody came running, or even cared to look, it seemed. Or perhaps someone did, but they saw the grotesque Ridgeback and didn't recognize them at all, so they left.

Hours turned to days, days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, and months turned to years. Not a single dragon who could even be suspected as a participant in a search party. No word of a missing dragon named Cygnus. Almost as if they were forgotten about, or nobody cared enough to even bother.

Anger filled the lone Ridgeback with each passing second. Their life was in shambles, their pride destroyed, and their yearning to be back at home with their friends becoming unbearable. But they found themselves feeling anger towards those they loved, too. None of them came to help and take them home.

At that point, Cygnus saw no point in bothering anymore. All they wanted to do was take their anger out on the dragons of the Midnight Seclusion who praised them so much and abandoned them as soon as they fell. They served that clan for so long, and that's the thanks they get? They were all ungrateful liars who didn't actually care. They gave those same positive words to anyone else in Cygnus' position.

But Cygnus would show them what the consequences are for not being thankful for someone risking everything for them. Especially Shadarsia, who was respected by the former capital guard, but not innocent. She not only abandoned them like their other peers did, but she made a lot of terrible choices. She isn't fit to rule, being the sick dragon she is.

However, Cygnus kept an open mind and had strength, and unlike Shadarsia, cared about the clan's citizens... at least until they saw just how much the citizens appreciated hard workers. If those ungrateful wretches were going to take everything for granted, they may not mind if Cygnus tore their lives away, right? Nobody appreciates things until they are gone. Besides, that would lessen the number of potential targets for those hive dragons. The only ones to receive their mercy would be the children, as they are innocent and not to be blamed for their parents' mistakes. They are free from Cygnus' wrath, and the Ridgeback is willing to admit that they're unable to directly harm a child. Even a horrid beast such as them is able to understand that a mere child can do no wrong.

The only thing that can heal them now is the torment of their former clan and the upcoming retribution as a result. They are aware that they have broken all their vows and harming those they once swore to protect, but to them their life ended as soon as they were captured. They had nothing else for them in this world. At least if they are killed by someone opposing them, nothing could hurt them after that. That's all they can wait for. But one thing for certain is that Cygnus won't go down without a fight.

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

lore notes
  • Cygnus' voice claim is Marta from Outlast 2.
  • Can sleep, but is unable to do so for longer than six hours.
  • Though Cygnus has become vengeful and unforgiving, all children are not their targets. It may seem weird when such a bloodthirsty dragon only spares them, but it does help them feel a little better about themselves. Not to mention they genuinely believe that children have nothing to do with their quarrel.
  • The only dragons Cygnus is after are the ones associated with the Midnight Seclusion (aside from children). Anyone who hasn't been is not their enemy unless they make themselves one.
  • Cygnus has narcissistic and manipulative tendencies. Hypocrisy, shifting blame, feeling like a victim, feeling little empathy to those they believe wronged them (but not complete loss of guilt). They are prone to losing their temper as well. Even before they were captured, they'd become angry, apologize later, promise not to do it again, only to become angry again sometime later.
  • In Cygnus' eyes they did nothing wrong. In reality, though, Cygnus' condition is due to their own reckless mistakes. They just don't want to accept it and would rather attack the ones they've shifted the blame to, even if they legitimately had nothing to do with all of it.
  • After their transformation, they could eat nearly anything, but they prefer to eat actual food. Additional abilities also include using tar oozing from their talons and jaws to make webbing and traps. These webs are massive to support their own weight so they can rest, hide, and be sheltered in the trees.
  • They are now completely flightless. Their wings are the part of their body that failed to transform the most and are only useful for shielding themselves.
  • They smell really, really bad. Like gasoline/petrol and rotting meat. Their breath is that but 10x worse, which could be a weapon. Their teeth and overall oral hygiene, and hygiene in general, is awful.

STATUS: ALIVE
DESIGNATION: UNKNOWN
OTHER NOTES: FALSE DRONE ASSIMILATED AS ADULT, NO CONNECTION TO BASELINE WAVELENGTH. RECOGNIZABLE DUE TO THEIR TENDENCY TO OOZE TAR FROM THEIR BODY AS A RESULT OF AN UNFINISHED ASSIMILATION

MILDLY DANGEROUS. ABILITIES POTENTIALLY USEFUL AS A PRAETORIAN DRONE. ADMINISTER MORE ASSIMILATION FLUID SHOULD THEY BE FOUND, BUT ONLY ENOUGH TO ACHIEVE A CONNECTION TO THE WAVELENGTH. WASTING THIS OPPORTUNITY WOULD BE POOR IN EFFICIENCY. STUDY IF GIVEN THE CHANCE.
