Sakura looked fondly at the blooming cherry trees in her Orchard. Their flowers were ranging from almost white to a soft rose to bright pink. The old Orchard had been overgrown, neglected for centuries, when she first arrived. But she had seen that the ancient trees were not dead yet, she had cut away the brambles and ivy that had overgrown them. Collected their seeds and grown saplings from them. After several failed attempts she even managed to grow hybrids from the seeds she brought from the Starwood strands, her home. Thus, some flowers were now glowing softly in the dark. Her beloved cherry trees were the first to bloom, but soon the other trees would follow: plum, apple, apricot and mirabelle.
She sighed. As much as she loved her trees, she disliked the prospect of hosting a festival in her beautiful Orchard. But she couldn’t deny a request from their matriarch. And, she thought with a sudden streak of guilt, they desperately needed something to lift everyone’s spirit after the recent devastating battle with the Serthis Beastclan. So many lives had been lost, so many families destroyed. They needed something to remind them of the power of life and growth. And her beautiful Orchard was the perfect place. Garlands of flowers decorated the trees, white pavilions had been erected, food and beverages been prepared. At night luminescent moss and fireflies would illuminate the place. If only their matriarch hadn’t asked her to open the festivities in front of the whole Clan. She might have thought it in honor, an appreciation of her work but for Sakura the prospect of being the center of attention was dreadful. And that new handsome Pearlcatcher would be there, too. She blushed furiously and shuddered. She knew she would make a fool of herself in front of him. What was even worse was the chance that this cherry tree festival could become an annual festival. Everyone was so enthusiastic, so cheerful and full of anticipation. “I can’t do this every year.” she thought desperately while watching her clanmates bustling about cheerfully. |
