Biography
"Let me tell you a story. Once, a long time ago, longer than you could count, there was a great hero who fought against the Shade..."
|
Zadkiel has worn many forms before the one he currently inhabitants, and plans to wear many more. He is not the only Zadkiel who has been, and yet he is. They have all been different, yet one and the same. One Zadkiel who was used to be a mighty warrior, a dragon touched by the Light who fought more fiercely against the Shade than any other. But the light that burns too brightly makes of itself a beacon, too easy to see in the dark. The Shade's vast, many-voiced mind turned towards him, their great enemy and surpassing threat, and made a special effort to extinguish the light that burned so brightly. His companions thought him only slain in battle, and mourned their fallen brother, but the truth was worse. The Shade had only destroyed his body, but not killed his spirit. Instead, it drew his soul into itself, tainting it with darkness. Zadkiel's soul, which had never known anything but to fight the Shade, continued to fight it even as it was corrupted and darkened. He does not know if he struggled free or if he was released, but after a timeless eternity, his spirit was suddenly free from the Shade's grasp, though not its influence. He still felt the discordant notes of its song echoing through him, but he was capable of acting independently. His spirit wandered, until it came across a nest of unhatched eggs, newly laid, the hatchlings unborn and unensouled. It was the perfect vessel, and the first time he took a new body for himself, but not the last. Each time he dies, his spirit lingers, and he searches for a new host. With each new body he takes, he hears the pleased laughter of the Shade in his ears more strongly. Zadkiel used to despise the method he had to resort to to gain a new body, but over his many lives, he's grown more used to it. He even made a point of seeking out different dragons and elements, as though trying on new bodies like coats was nothing unusual. He particularly enjoys being large, fierce breeds, like ridgebacks, guardians, and imperials, but he has found the agile body of a skydancer, or the powerful magic in the small body of a fae too can suit his purposes. After a time in any body, his own shade-touched spirit begins to warp his outer form. His eyes gradually darken, eventually to turn jet black, and his colors melt and change, darkening and fading, leaving jagged slashes of color across his hide like old death wounds, and dark hollows on his face like a grinning skull. Sometimes he finds it amusing to get himself killed before the changes can become too obvious, and watch the clan mourn what they thought was a member of their family, before he moves on to seek another host. The current clan with whom he resides knows him for being shade-touched, having recognized it unusually fast before his current host body even began to show the signs of his corruption. Although they were rather firm about their “offer” to join their clan (all the better to keep an eye on him Zadkiel knew) he was intrigued enough to accept. Still a warrior at heart, although he has grown colder and less altruistic in what he chooses to fight for, they offered him enough of the work that he found amusing to keep him around. Cold, capricious, and with the memories of dozens of lives behind him, Zadkiel sees most other dragons as mayflies, foolishly rushing about their short, petty, little lives. He is fascinated by the way the disparate dragons of the clan unite to serve a cause that will live on long after they die (and perhaps there is a spark of the old Zadkiel, who remembers being sword and shield to those who needed him, that also approves.) He knows that the clan suspects him of still being more obedient to the Shade than he lets on, but thus far he hasn't given them any definite proof that that's the case. ~by Mirrorstone |
"What happened to the hero? Why, he lost of course, and the Shade took him, just as it will someday take us all."
