Biography
ELEGY the DIVINE yeet its a subtitle |
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Last Elegy checked, there were 8,912 books—give or take—in Eden’s collection. Eden’s children come and go as they please, and books vanish and materialize with their aimless, irregular visits. Eden doesn’t care, but Elegy very much does. Elegy knows the library backwards and forwards—by author’s surname, by date of publication, by order of acquisition, by color. She spends candlelit nights organizing, cataloging, reorganizing, and recataloging Eden’s forgotten treasures. She cobbles together shelving units from pieces of scrap wood and metal, hoping that the illusion of order will grant her a sense of fulfillment. It doesn’t; the self-appointed work never ends, and there’s no satisfaction in a job half-done. Unlike Eden, Elegy cannot let the passage of time fall by the wayside—as much as she sometimes wishes she could. She feels the onslaught of each second, minute, hour in the beating of her own heart, in the rise and fall of her own breaths. She can’t sleep through the deafening drone of existence. In caring for Eden’s forgotten treasures, Elegy can at least filter out the worst of the white noise. Elegy’s world falls quiet within the walls of the library, and she can finally lose herself in the familiar rhythm of shelving and labeling. Last Elegy checked, there were 8,918 books—give or take—in Eden’s collection. When Eden’s children come by, she ensures that they sign out each book with proper notation. She gives them two weeks to bring them back. Eden might not care, but Elegy certainly does. |

? Because Elegy rearranges Eden’s collection on a weekly basis, it’s almost impossible for anyone but Elegy to navigate—and while Elegy does keep a paper catalogue of each item’s ever-changing location, she operates almost entirely on memorization. ? Elegy is the only one who can rouse Eden from her deathlike slumber. Eden beholds this ability as a god-given gift, proof of their star-crossed compatibility; Elegy regards it as yet another chore. Even immortal beings need to eat, to stretch their legs—Elegy makes sure Eden remembers to live. ? Elegy stays with Eden because Eden is one of her few equals, and because she's developed affection for her throughout the years. She's unsure whether that affection constitutes love. ? Most of Eden’s children write Elegy off as a humorless immortal seraph. They don’t know that Elegy finds watching them struggle to make sense of her most recent catalogue to be hilarious. |
