"take what you can, give nothing back."

Erzulie lived a childhood of slavery. It wasn't rare for children and women to be captured and placed among ships, imprisoned and forced to work for dirty sailors. She was captured at a young age and set to work on the largest and most intimidating pirate ship in Sornieth, the Drowned Wretch. At night, Erzulie would often sneak about the ship, exploring it and committing the hallways to memory. She was never interested in exploring the taverns and inns at the ports the ship would dock at.

As she grew older, though, Erzulie quickly became tired of working for those above her. By then, she had risen a position higher than a deckhand but still incredibly low. With help from her great memory of the Drowned Wretch, she would sneak around at night, blackmailing and sabotaging those in positions above her. Erzulie's goal was to overthrow the captain, ultimately leaving him stranded, without a ship or a crew. Leaving fake scandalous notes and stealing personal items led to those in high positions to lose their jobs slowly but steadily. Erzulie was never caught because she always managed to pin the blame on someone else, aiding in her journey even more.

Eventually, when the coatl had finally attained her so desired captain status, she set out to find her own ship. Erzulie ended up conquering one herself, the magnificent Riptide. After overthrowing the captain of the Drowned Wretch, she inherited all of it’s crew members who begrudgingly agreed to work for her onboard her own vessel. The first few days after Erzulie acquired her own ship, a new member joined their crew: Olly.

Erzulie looked up from her wooden mug of beer. "Aye, sir? What are you needin'?" she inquired. A trembling, weak dragon stood before her, clearly nervous.
"I-i am in need of a job. I've caught wind that you're signing men up tonight."
Erzulie looked away, taking his offer into consideration.
"You're not the pirate type, aye?" she commented, mindlessly tapping her claw on the old tavern counter.
He gulped.
"Aye—I mean, no, I can prove myself, ma'am."
"It's cap'n to you." she hissed.
After a few moments of silence, she sighed and asked the bartender for another beer.
"I need one more deckhand. We leave tonight." She hooked onto his shirt with one claw.
Erzulie looked him directly in the eyes.
"Laddie.. can you sail, can you fight?"

Olly was the polar opposite of Erzulie: she’s disciplined when he’s rowdy. She's stern when he's laughing hysterically. Their bond started off rockily, as he would often joke around when she's barking orders at the crew, yet he would never disobey them. One rank after another, Olly was promoted. After about a year of working onboard the vanquishing vessel, he earned himself the title of first mate. There would be times in their relationship where she would give him the authority to bark orders at the crew; those were his absolute favourite times. They had a beautiful friendship, and one that was quite rare on the unforgiving seas.

Despite Erzulie and her crew being the most feared pirates on the seas, she has never killed. Whenever she and the Riptide attacked a trade ship or rival pirate ship, she’d rob the men of everything but their lives. She would often say that it was so word of her could be quickly spread, though part of the truth was that she just couldn’t kill. She couldn't bring herself to finish it. So, when a cursed sea creature attacked the ship, Erzulie knew she’d have to do something other than take its life.

It was a quiet evening onboard the Riptide, the usual drinking and rollicking behaviour. A storm quickly rolled in on the horizon—a worrying sight for the captain of a ship. Erzulie jumped down from her post and wasted no time giving orders to her crew.
"Avast ye! Batten down the hatches, bring up the longboats!" she announced, going through the usual procedure. One of her crew members suddenly burst into her cabin.
"Cap'n, I would never question your abiliti-- er, choices, as a captain but..." he glanced nervously past the bow of the ship. "Is there any particular reason that we're sailing overtop the Leviathan Trench... during a storm?"

Panic set off in Erzulie's mind. She had misunderstood the amount of time it'd take for them to cross the trench, leaving them still crossing over when the storm hit. But, of course, she couldn't let this panic show.
"Go mind yer own business, Henry. I'm the captain, I'll make the orders."
She waved a hand, signalling for him to leave. As he did, she jumped up and shut the cabin door behind him.
She breathed out slowly. "My ship... we'll be destroyed. Demolished. Doomed."
Erzulie left her room to lean over the side of the ship. Suddenly, she noticed an enormous creature lurking beneath her vessel, ready to strike at any moment. The sea dragon lifted its serpentine body out of the ocean, water draining and menacing eyes staring back at her.

Nobody said a word. Her heart stopped beating.

Erzulie's eyes travelled from the creature's snout to its scar-ridden body.
"You're hurt." she mumbled.
The creature emitted a low, rumbling noise. Her sailors began throwing themselves into the raging sea, clearly put under some kind of trance. She covered her ears, as did many of her crew members.
"Olly! Take my cutlass -- you're captain if I never return." Erzulie yelled.
Then she, too, threw herself overboard.

Whilst struggling in the unruly water, Erzulie found the chest of the violent serpent and held onto whatever she could grab. The scale of a beast was all that was separating her and death.
A shimmering stone was embedded in the chest of the dragon and it was calling to her, beckoning her to touch it. Erzulie didn't just touch the relic, no. With all her might, she violently withdrew the crystal from his rough hide.

No light.

No sound.

The world went quiet for a split second, the seas calmed down and the raging storm cleared up.
It was only a second, though. The sea serpent went limp.

Much later, the sea creature, Aegir, revealed that the stone embedded within his bones was what had cursed him. Long ago, he had been exploring the open ocean when he found it floating within a bottle with the word ‘Doubloons’ written on it. It had been forcefully attached to his chest and forced him to drown passing sailors by luring them with his low, grumbling humming tune. After Erzulie saved him, Aegir felt eternal gratitude and decided to join her crew, forming a strong bond with her and often helping Erzulie and the crew of the Riptide in times of need.

The rest of her story is yet to be told.

Erzulie slammed her last mug of rum on the rusty tavern bar, wiping her mouth.
"It's a pirate's life for me."
