When Jak built Daxter, he contructed him so that Daxter could stick out his tongue upon command. He did this to tease Samos, though at some point the tongue got stuck due to overuse of the command and Jak decided to leave it that way.

On a warm summer evening in one of the bigger trading cities of the Shifting Expanse Samos was closing up his scrapstore, when he noticed the faint screeching of a recently hatched dragon nearby. He assumed that the hatchling would soon be tended to by his parents and the screeching subside, so he didn’t pay it any mind. I didn’t subside.

With a sigh of frustration and a hint of curiosity, the old Snapper went to check on the source of the noise, followed it into a deserted alley two streets down the road of his shop, and came to a halt when he had finally found it. The source was an old, worn basket, holding a blanket and the small, curled-up thing whose screeching had lured the shopkeeper into the alley. Samos looked around, wondering if the parents were anywhere in sight. Of course they weren’t. The hatchling had obviously been abandoned.

For a moment the Snapper considered turning away and pretending he hadn’t seen anything. Forgetting the hatchling and focusing on his own life and problems instead. He took a step away. Then another two. Three… When the crying suddenly stopped, the dragon stopped in his tracks and looked back, wondering what had caused the abrupt silence. Too worried to walk away any further, Samos turned back to check on the dragon, cursing his concern under his breath.
Then his eyes locked with those of the hatchling and the old dragon knew he had lost.

”Damn it, fine! But if you’re trouble, you’re back on the streets, understood!?” he growled, lifting up the basket. “What’s your name anyway, huh? Your flighty parents leave a note or something?”

He checked the container but the only thing he found were the remaining few letters of something that had once been written onto it. A name perhaps? “...jak? … can’t read what the rest of it says… That your name?”
He addressed the hatchling that answered with a big-eyed, silent gaze.
“Whatever. Let’s stick to Jak then.”
Jak made a squeak that Samos took as approval. The Snapper repressed a surge of emotion and began carrying the basket home.

The small brat was already stealing his way into his big, old heart.

Even though Daxter was built by Jak, he is capable of thought and emotion.
He can't speak but Jak and Samos have learnt to read the golem's body language and to interpret his movements.
When Daxter isn't powered by the gauntlet, he goes into standby mode.

____Under the Samos’ care, Jak grew up to be a suasive salesman and skilled mechanic who helped the old Snapper run his store and build mechanical trinkets of all sorts.
His hands were better at detail-work than his custodian’s and Samos realized with a mix of pride and hurt ego that the student would soon have surpassed his master.
Definite proof was given the day Jak introduced him to Daxter.

____Again and again Samos had assisted his protégé with his increasingly extravagant projects until the young dragon had begun sometimes working on his own and only coming to see his mentor to proudly show him his work’s result.
Daxter was such a result, though when Samos watched the mechanic golem flash to life with a thunderbolt that sprung out of Jak’s gauntlet, he had troubles believing that it was a creation of the hatchling he had taken in over a dozen years ago.
He had grown and learned so much, Samos realized, that there was little left that he could teach him in his little store and workshop in the trading town they lived in.

____Soon Jak would have to seek new places and people to expand his knowledge, the old dragon knew. And he wouldn’t allow himself to stand in the way of his adoptive son’s progress.

____It was with reluctance that Jak shouldered his bag. It contained only his most prized belongings, a few mechanical tools, some money and food for the trip, that he hoped wouldn’t last too long. He still was convinced that it wasn’t necessary. That he would be of much greater use at the scrapstore, assisting his mentor, than somewhere alone out on the road. But the discussions with Samos had been long and repetitive and Jak knew that the stubborn old man was convinced that he was holding him back. So, to prove him wrong and appease his caring mind, the young mechanic had decided to follow his mentor’s suggestion and go on a short trip. See the world. Come back and resume just where he had left off.
His heart was loyal but naive, Samos knew, and the world was a fantastic one, filled with excitement for the young and curious.
When he hugged his son goodbye, biting back his tears, he hoped but did not expect his son to ever return again.

____A long time passed and Jak travelled the world, learning about mechanics and improving his own skills as he met and exchanged knowledge with other mechanics all around the continent.
Through all the years he kept writing letters to Samos to keep him up to date and allowed himself to visit every few months to check on the old dragon. Without question, he still adored his old home. But a new longing had settled in his heart, a longing that drove him through the world, his golem companion always by his side, to seek to expand his knowledge and then tell Samos all about it in his letter.

Eventually his journey led him to the Luminous Cave in the Sunbeam Ruins, where his path crossed with the infamous magi-scientist’s, Lier. Jak had heard about the Fae’s studies and, eager to learn from the dragon the rest of the world believed to be dead, he was invited to stay and assist him in his research into the Luminous Cave's mythical attributes. Days stretched to weeks, weeks to months, until Jak realized that he didn’t want to leave behind the friends he had made during this time.
His research with Lier had become so valuable to him, that Jak couldn’t bring himself to leave anymore, especially since they had begun to work on a cure for the Fae's condition.

Jak has lived in the lair ever since, often writing letters to his adoptive father and sometimes taking on the journey to visit him back in the Shifting Expanse himself.
During every visit he would gush about his and Lier’s research and findings, Daxter would flap around excitedly and Samos would listen quietly, filled with secret joy that, despite all the excitement, his adoptive son had never forgotten him.
