It was a warm, spring day high on the Rotrock Rim. A weak breeze brushed through the lands, carrying the sickly smell of rot and anguish. Tattered cloth and sinew rustled as a young Fae passed, landing silently on a long-dried rib bone, folding in her wings as she looked north towards the Wyrmwound. A rumble was heard and a loud pop. There was no doubt that the Plaguebringer’s latest brew was something to behold. Through the dusty and ash-filled air, the young Fae made out the faint appearance of a large Tundra as he made his way towards her.

The two of them had been together for no more than three moons but had grown quite fond of each other’s company. Midyss valued the company of someone larger than her, and no doubt Orrin found value in keeping small, quick scout at his side. The two of them had met when their individual clan were torn apart by the rampaging Beastclan hordes, and it was that – above all else – that kept them together. This area of the Rotrock Rim, an arid locale of rocky outcroppings and little life had become their home.

Midyss tilted her head, flipping her fins excitedly, “So? Did you find anything?”

“Oh yes, plenty.” Orrin turned his head, grabbing a satchel with his teeth. He allowed the bag to fall to the ground with a dull thud as bundles of herbs spilled out. Midyss turned behind her to a small gathering of dragons that huddled around a fire. She caught the gaze of the clan’s youngest – twin Pearlcatcher hatchlings. The scurried over, whiskers bobbing as they dug into their meal.

“Thank you, Orrin,” Midyss said. “We must take special care of the hatchlings should this fledgling clan survive.” Orrin bowed his head as Midyss unfurled her wings and returned to her place by the fire. She landed on the horns of an Imperial and surveyed her surroundings again. Here, sat a dozen dragons around a fire under a natural covering of rocks. She and Orrin had begun to gather wayward strays after their encounter with the hordes that destroyed their home clans. They, like Midyss and Orrin, had grudges or a general hatred of dragons’ natural enemies and had agreed to take up arms against them. Midyss let her fins settle, these were fine warriors.

Fine warriors they were – but ultimately not enough. Beastclan numbers had bolstered considerably in the last few years and her fellow Plague clans were being wiped out day-after-day. Midyss felt as though each time she closed her eyes, she could hear the screams of her brethren carries over the arid winds of the Scarred Wasteland. Her own clan had not done much better. While they had fought well and defended themselves, their numbers were dwindling.

A clan which had grown to about four dozen individuals had lost many of its own over the last six moons. A particularly hard loss for them all was the loss of two particularly young Pearlcatchers, having wandered off in the night to practice sparring. All that was left of them come morning was a satchel of herbs and two cracked pearls. At this Midyss took to the skies, seeking journey to find reprieve for her young clan. She found herself in the lands of the Arcanist first, trading off bones and usable cloth for an enchanted satchel – one with the ability to hold an amount of contents far beyond the believable.

She journeyed from the lands of one flight to the next – stealing away a single egg at each locale. Midyss was a Plague dragon and no stranger to survival and turmoil – but also allowed herself to see her own limitations. Her clan needed help. And it would get help from the other flights. A Plague warrior is a nasty thing to face in combat but has his own weaknesses in addition to strengths. But an army of multi-flight dragons? Well, they could be unstoppable in combat.

The Earth, Fire, and Lightning eggs never hatched. The Light egg was stolen in a Beastclan raid upon their camp and the Water egg smashed on the same day. The Nature hatchling was born sickly and only breathed for three days. The little Shadowling lasted much longer but was killed in a training accident. The one who made it were hatchlings of Arcane, Wind, and Ice.

Upon completion of their training, Midyss blessed them with their names. Juni, the purple Spiral of Arcane and a master of illusion magic. Cyprus, the Ice dragon with a knack for defensive maneuvers. Aza, the Wind Imperial who found scouting for the hordes simple and had a joy for whipping away marauders with a flick of her tail. They became known as fierce warriors and were feared by many of the surviving neighboring clans. Their aid in pushing back the invading Beastclans was invaluable to Midyss, Orrin, and the rest of clan. Their hatchlings began to sleep soundly as night for the first time in what felt like an age.

It was a cold winter’s night that saw Midyss wake up in a sweat. A deep chill, sundering and soul-deep snaked its way through the little Fae. No winter’s breeze of the Icewarden would cause so much dread. She lifted her head and felt a sticky wetness fail to hold her back. She looked up to the Ridgeback she’d found shelter under that night and right into his gaping throat. A gash had been cut so deep that Midyss could see bone. In alarm, she stumbled back into the arms of the cold Ridgeback, feeling his limp talons brush against her. It had likely only been those very talons – keeping her out of sight – that had spared her own life.

Midyss rushed forward and bolted as quick as she could for Aza, the nearest of her warriors, as she slumbered near the ashes of the clan’s dead fire. The little Fae bit down hard enough on the Imperial’s ear to draw blood, the tangy metallic taste erupting in her mouth as Aza roused to action. The ensuing battle was enormous. Midyss had awoken before the ambush killed her whole clan but many were downed and many more would be before daybreak. Swords clashed and arrows flew. Magic sloshed forward – both skilled and not – as it found the nearest target. Midyss, Orrin, and her warriors fought valiantly, driving back the ambushing party as day broke around them.

A red sun rose. Blood pooled on the ground, steaming up from where it hit winter’s ice crystals. The clan was in tatters. Bodies of the young and old, warriors and healers, Plague or not, littered the ground and the remaining members surveyed the damage. It was the night sight that nearly drove Midyss to tears. Her finds flattened and voice broke as she struggled to speak. Before her lay clutch after clutch of eggs, all once nestled safely in their nesting grounds. Now, they lay broken and beaten. Some were only cracked, others oozed yolk or blood. All would never hatch.

It was Orrin who took the lead this time, swooping up the speechless Fae and began motioning for the others to follow. Some left on the journey, peeling away when none would notice and others still declaring they would stay. It was about a dozen who followed Orrin as he trekked northeast. They crossed the boneyards and brambles with little difficulty, reaching the northern rivers in only a handful of days.

The Viridian Labyrinth was much different than their native wastelands. The towering Behemoth greeted them as the crossed the waters into the lands of the Nature dragons. It was here in their wading of the rivers that their little clan washed away their inborn stigma of Nature dragons to enter a land plagued by fewer hordes of Beastclans – a land where they could rebuild.

The clan pushed in further, settling finally in the Shrieking Wilds. It was here that they found a grand baobab, whose roots spread high and wide – the perfect shelter for ailing Plague dragons seeking a new life. It was here under the roots that the clan came to be known as the Sanctuary of the Gladeveins. The few that survived the journey were able to bear witness to a growth and rebirth of Midyss and Orrin’s clan. Taking up the mantles of Nature dragons, none will forget where they came from. Survival is the cornerstone of life for Plague dragons, and growth for Nature. It is here, in their sanctuary, where they revere both as one and the same.
