Biography

Quote:
Shemer was born in fairly large clan on the Rotrock Rim, one hatchling among many. Mag, passing by on his journeys, saw potential in her, and took her from her own clan to Ligare to learn magic under his tutelage.

She progressed in leaps and bounds, mastering basic fighting spells with ease, and eagerly wanting to move on to more complex magic. But though she didn’t know it at the time, her innate magical abilities peaked at that point, and no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t push herself any further than the basics. Seeing her frustration and failure, Mag thought that some gentle pressure would help her achieve better things, and pushed her harder he had before. However, rather than pushing her beyond her limits, it broke her instead, and she abandoned the study of magic in bitterness.

She fared a lot better in physical training, finding no such upper limit to her strength, and quickly became one of the lead fighters in the clan, then the head of the guard. She also became close to a couple who’d just moved in: Squall and Golem. The two of them seemed fairly mismatched, but Golem was kind and nervous, and Squall had a charm of his own, so Shemer soon became close friends with the couple. After some time, she began to understand that the mismatch she’d seen on the surface was actually a fundamental fracture in their relationship, and the couple argued often.

One evening, Squall came to see her alone. He told her that his troubles with Golem had reached a climax, and that he needed someone to stay with, and that there was nobody he trusted in the world more than her. One thing led to another that night, and she became Squall’s lover. Their relationship continued, intense and uncommunicative (much like Squall himself), and Shemer found herself swept away in it. She was surprised, but not completely horrified, when the union resulted in two eggs.

She wasn’t against the idea of raising hatchlings with Squall, she thought of him as a distant yet reliable dragon who’d probably make a passingly competent father. But all this was shattered when she revealed the eggs to him, and he in turn revealed that he was still married to Golem, and that Shemer was just a tactic he was using to make her jealous. Shemer fled the clan with her eggs, seething with shame. She blamed herself, as she tended to when things went wrong, hating herself for never asking the details from Squall or checking up on Golem to see if she was alright. Wanting to pretend it had never happened, she left her eggs: one on the Southern Icefields, another in the rocks of Dragonhome. Then she returned home.

To her horror, the two hatchlings, now the fully grown Solaris and Lunar, turned up one day on the doorstep of the clan. They claimed that something had drawn them there, a magnetic force like the call of a god. Despite everyone’s confusion and doubt, the two dragons were clearly here to stay. Shemer forced down her shame and tried to talk to them the day after they returned, but the pair gave off such an aura of cold disgust that she found herself heading home immediately.

Shemer now lives in the same clan as her sons, who maintain a frosty relationship with her, her ex-lover, who pretends that their relationship never happened, and his wife, who is painfully bad at hiding her sadness. She keeps herself to herself, promising never to get mixed up in that kind of business again. She wishes she could repair her relationship with her sons, but she knows deep down that it’ll take an awful lot for them to forgive her.

"You've got guts picking a fight with me. What a shame I'm about to spill them."

Nowadays, Shemer spends her time between training new recruits and taking long, solitary walks through the Shrieking Wilds. No one in the clan is sure what, exactly, she does on these walks, but it is understood that no one may join her on them. The only exception is, occasionally, Calahan. And the quiet, pensive Imperial that just recently joined the clan. It seems that the two of them have an understanding that would be difficult to put to words, and have formed a bond over the last few months that is particularly sublime.

No one in Ligare ever thought Shemer would truly be happy again. After the fiasco that ensued when her sons returned home, many clan members refused to even speak to her. Golem, who had once been her closest friend, couldn't look at her without beginning to cry. Squall pretended she didn't exist, though he did acknowledge their sons with initial interest. Lunar and Solaris, at first, hated her. It seemed as though everyone in Shemer's life had turned against her. But, slowly, the truth began to come out. It took much convincing from Calahan for Shemer to even make the announcement to Thilykos, who immediately called a meeting to bring this news to the clan. But even with Squall's betrayal laid plain, there were those who didn't believe Shemer and those who shunned her entirely for abandoning her first eggs.

It was not easy for her to earn back the trust of her clanmates, but it did happen, little by little. Lunar is still icy towards her, but Solaris has begun stopping by the Guardsbough occasionally to see her. And that haunted-looking stranger who turned up and stayed mostly to himself had taken a marked interest in her. Though Shemer had never expected to allow anyone into her heart again, Kane never demanded anything, never anticipated she could return his feelings. They swapped stories of battles they'd been in, both in and off the fields and skies. Kane became one of the only dragons that accompanied Shemer on her walks, where they appreciated the war to live raging all around them.

This time, it was no surprise when Kane and Shemer announced their nest to the clan. Shemer's sons were the first ones they told, and they received the news with a mixture of shock, joy, and apprehension. Shemer and her oldest sons were still repairing their relationships, but she told them she felt ready to do this right, and hoped they would want to be involved with their half-siblings.

It seemed fitting that Kane and Shemer would announce a two-egg nest. When the two little Imperials stumbled out of their shells, Ligare held a celebration from which Squall was notedly absent. Golem, however, came and spoke with Shemer for the first time in months, and the already high emotions of the night spilled over them both. After much crying and comforting, the two were able to reconcile and from then on Golem was seen more and more in the den shared by Kane and Shemer than the one she shared with Squall. There are even rumors floating through the clan that Golem may be joining their family permanently, too.
