Calahan was raised in a cult.

It's something she tells nearly every dragon she meets, within a few minutes of meeting them, even. It doesn't help with the awkwardness, but somewhere along the way Calahan got it in her head that it might.

It wasn't a particularly bad cult, not that she can remember anyways, but it just. Was a cult. Only after she and her mother escaped did Calahan truly begin to realize how different her life was from her peers', and not because of anything her mother said, but instead because of other dragons' reactions. Her mother was too afraid, to ashamed to explain everything to Calahan once they escaped. She had tried, once, but Calahan asked too many difficult questions for the stressed dragoness. In the end, Calahan had to find out the answers from dragons who were far less forgiving than a mother would be, and who tended to mock her for her odd tendencies. This left Calahan with a strong feeling of separation from the rest of her peers, which influences how she interacts with dragons now, unable to stand on her own feet in a social setting.

Perhaps Shemer saw potential in her, or perhaps she saw herself in the ostracized dragonet, but one way or another the Wildclaw took Calahan under her wing. With Shemer's help, Calahan grew to be a respectable warrior, though it was not easy. Both had... difficulty with the mentoring process, and two 'outsider' types do not always fit together easily. They worked through the trials, however, and Calahan eventually came to be the clan's general.

Calahan now considers Shemer to be part of her family, and is fiercely protective of the Wildclaw, though this was not always the case. Part of the issues the pair had to work through was an ingrained dislike of Shemer for her fling with Squall - the cult she was raised in having very strong opinions on and punishments for infidelity. This was something that her own mother had to help with as well, and was truly a learning moment for Calahan. Up until then, she still saw the world in the same black-and-white way she had been raised with, but what Shemer did wasn't quite what she thought. And combined with the guilt she felt... Even Calahan could see that Shemer had been tricked, taken advantage of.

That being said, if there is one dragon Calahan hates, it is Squall. She has learned to see things more objectively, but can't regard what he did to his family and to Shemer with anything but outright disgust. She has more than once remarked about how much she'd like to step on the slimy Pearlcatcher, who in turn tends to stay well away.

In this time of relative peace in the Home Tree, Calahan has had time to indulge in her less rigid hobbies. She's become involved in a weekly poetry circle with Elvira, Muuras, and Bugatti and has begun sparring with Shemer again as well. After Solaris and Lunar came home and Shemer's secret was out, their relationship had faltered as Calahan had been forced to face difficult and conflicting feelings about her mentor and idol. But as Shemer's side of the story came to light, Calahan found the apprehension she felt towards the Wildclaw begin to dissipate. As she's one of the few dragons who openly associates with Shemer anymore, it's not uncommon to find the two of them in the barracks or sharing tea with Elvira.

Calahan has also been noticeably seeking out Solaris ever since she relinquished her distrust of Shemer. She wanted the two of them to have a better relationship and sought to accomplish this goal getting to know Solaris and telling him about his mother. Though Calahan isn't the best at conversation, the two have struck up a passable friendship, though the awkwardness of their relationships to Shemer is a bit of an elephant in the room for them.
