Stood before the council, Naku felt small. From their rocky perches, they looked down at her with sharp, piercing gazes. They didn't care who she was; they only cared for what she could do.

"Show us." At the center of the semi-circle, Taravasa sat, and her commanding voice rang around the cavern. It took much of Naku's willpower not to flinch. "Prove yourself worthy of being our Sister."

The little pearlcatcher's mouth was suddenly dry, and her paws shook slightly. Fishing some herbs from the pouch at her hip, she scrawled a hasty sigil in the soil at her feet and set the dry leaves in the center. She took up a soft chant, taking a step back and weaving her paws in delicate patterns through the air. In an instant, the herbs caught fire; they filled the air with a sickly sweet smell.

The smoke that rose from the fire slipped from a dirty gray to a dull red, and it began to twist and curl above the heads of the Council as though it had a mind of it's own.

"Is that it?" Naku's head whipped up at look at Taravasa, who had spoken. "You bring us a party trick and expect to join the ranks of Umbra Sol? Escort her out."

The pearlcatcher watched in dismay as a mirror cloaked in black approached her; through the shade of its hood, only a pair of gleaming green eyes were visable.

No... She had given her entire life to joining Umbra Sol. She couldn't be getting brushed off this easily.
In a panicked state, Naku flung her paws up in defense and shouted a word, one that was made incomprehensible in the following boom. The swirling cloud of fumes that had been resting idly above her dove down, and with a loud crack, it splintered through the advancing mirror's chest. Every scale that had coated its lithe form had driven itself into its skin; at her feet, the mirror fell to the ground and began to convulse, shrieking in agony. After a few terrifying moments, it went still.

Horrified, Naku looked up at the council. She had just killed one of their Brothers; she was sure she had just assured her own death. Instead, she was met with curious looks of approval and surprise. A steady murmur was running through the dragons assembled.

Taravasa cleared her throat, cutting them off. From her perch, she leaped, gliding down to land before Naku. Instinctually, the pearlcatcher took a step back. Her death was at hand, she was positive.

But Taravasa did not lash out or curse her with a spell. "Welcome, Sister. You have proven yourself worthy of Umbra Sol."

Naku was shell-shocked. She... had been accepted? Hastily, she dipped her head and muttered thanks.

"Now come, we must officiate the joining of our new Sister." Calling to the rest of the Council, the shadowy nocturne padded from the grand cavern into a smaller one nearby.

Unsure, Naku followed, and the others trailed behind her. Inside the new cavern was a still pool that shone like pure moonlight. On the other side of it, Taravasa sat. She traced her claw across the surface, sending tiny ripples across it.

"Get in."

Startled, Naku stammered out a "what?"

"Get in." The nocturne repeated, indicating the silvery pool. "You must bathe in the pool and add your blood, as the rest of Umbra Sol has. Only then, may you join our family.

Gulping, the pearlcatcher touched her paw to the pool's surface. The liquid inside was unlike anything she'd ever felt. It was icily cold, and the chill ran up her arm and deep into her bones. But it also called to her, as though she were parched on a burning summer's day.

She continued to submerge her form into the pool, drawing herself further and further into its freezing touch. Soft whispers began to grace her ears, lulling her. Further, she stepped, until the silver moonlight came to her chest and coated every other part of her.

"Good," Taravasa crooned, "now place a few droplets of your blood into the pool."

Obediently, Naku opened her palm and dragged a claw across the tender, unscaled skin. It should have hurt, but she felt no discomfort. With an odd fascination, she watched the blood bead up from the small cut. Tilting her paw, she was mesmerized by the dark crimson that slid across her scales and dripped into the liquid below.

As soon as her blood touched the silver liquid, it dispersed. It might have been her imagination, but the liquid around her seemed to redden slightly.

Around her, the Council had formed a circle, and they began to chant under their breath.

A warm feeling grew in her chest, and as the Council chanted faster, it grew hotter, until it felt as though it might burn a hole through her entirely. This time, she felt the pain, and it was so intense that she didn't even have the capability to scream.

And as quickly as it had started, it stopped. The chanting dropped off, and the Council lifted their bowed heads.

"It is done," Taravasa said decisively, "welcome, Sister Naku."

"Welcome, Sister Naku." The Council echoed the nocturne's words, their conjoined voices filling the air of the cavern.
