Selenia always knew she was destined for great things. From the moment she was old enough to understand, her parents told her of the Calling, and how her marked egg set her apart from her peers. Yet they also taught her that one's fate was not a gift to sit passively and accept, but something one had to strive for and earn. She was not to sit and wait for the day to come. When the Shadowbinder Called her, she would be ready. For years, she trained. She learned how to manipulate the shadows that dominated her homeland, and to bend them to her will. She played every sort of game, devising strategies and ploys until she could win against almost any foe. She expanded her wardrobe, using her collection to blend in to any environment, and take on any persona. She became a master of all things that might be pleasing to her dark goddess. Yet throughout the years, part of her doubted. What if the time came, and the call didn't come? Or what if she was Called, and she didn't know how to answer, despite all her years of hard work? Usually when she had these thoughts, her reaction was to throw herself harder into her studies. At times, a suitor would approach her, trying to court her. Though she yearned for companionship, and a family, she always turned them down. How could she tie herself down, when her duty always lurked around the corner? She had to be ready. One year, an invitation arrived at her lair. She opened it to find that the organizers of the Trickmurk Circus had asked her to run an event. Finally, she'd be able to prove herself, put some of her skills to good use. With a heavy heart, she set the invitation aside. She couldn't commit to such a task, not when the Calling could come at any time. She went out for a walk to take her mind off things. The moon shone brightly, and the bright colours of her scales seemed to glow, like many of the flora and fauna around her. She loved walking in the woods at night- the edges between self and shadow seemed to blur. Not for the first time, she wondered if that would be her task. Become one with the night. She returned home sometime later, still pondering. She was startled to find a crowd in front of the lair entrance, and even more shocked to be swarmed by it. The Calling is upon us, the dragons cried. It is time! She felt a sick lurch in her stomach. What had she missed? There had been no Call. She hadn't heard the Shadowbinder's sibilant voice. She'd always imagined she would hear it in her mind, or perhaps emanating from a nearby shadow. This was a mistake! Yes, of course, she told the crowd. I heard it just now. I must leave tonight. She thanked the wellwishers and hurried inside her lair, blinking back tears of shame. Years of training, all for nothing. She wasn't Called, or chosen. She was just... a shadow of one. She spotted the invitation and picked it up. There was nothing stopping her now. She grabbed her go bag, which had faithfully been kept ready for the time of the Calling. She tucked the invitation inside, then took flight, soaring up over the trees. Her heart was heavy, even as she took in all the wonder and beauty of the tangled forest below her. Selenia arrived at the circus a few days later, feeling mostly sorry for herself. She wandered the half-constructed stalls and tents, eventually finding the dragon in charge. Selenia, she said. We're so happy you came. This is such an great event. Thank you, Selenia answered. She wanted believe she was the one meant for greatness. There are few dragons more suited to teaching Sornieth about what it means to be a shadow dragon, she continued. Yours is a special calling. Selenia started. I'm sorry, there's been a mistake. I wasn't Called. The organizer gave her a curious look. There's no mistake. You've been chosen. If you're ready, we've got an important job for you. Selenia hastily pulled out the invitation, scrutinizing it. Could it be she had always misunderstood? Perhaps the Calling didn't mean a literal call. She had always imagined the goddess would speak, and she would jump to answer. But their kind were tricksters, manipulators. Why shouldn't the goddess be subtle in her machinations? Or perhaps it was meant to be overt, and the invitation was just that- an invitation. For though she'd been chosen, she could still choose. Her fate was not something to be thrust upon her, but a duty she took on herself. She looked up at the organizer and smiled, and her worries finally faded. She'd been Called, and it was time to answer the Call. I'm ready. Gathering. | xxxx |
