► Memories

Somewhere in the rocky plains of Sornieth, there once was a young Pearlcatcher - that of who belonged to the Wind Flight, enjoyed gazing at the sky and the stars above as they felt the cold winds of a fresh new sunrise. This young dragon was more of a loner, although their kind is known to be social.

Day by day, the fledgling watched over the skies and observed the atmosphere - a fast learner, they memorized the patterns of the weather.
Happy with their work, the little one decided to learn more of this; carefully studying how often the events happen and marking the days and months of when things will occur.

Many years had passed, the Pearlcatcher, now known as "Starshifter" for their love of the stars and shifting their self-taught "weather watching," as she once called before she got to officially learn actual meteorology.
She always got top scores, and others are surprised, though some did envy her by how swift and clean she could answer and guess.

Starshifter would always be asked by the other dragons of things such as "how are you so good at this?" "Tell me your secret; how did you get such scores?" "Admit it. You've been cheating the whole time, aren't you?"
And of course, Starshifter would sigh and would answer "I taught myself since I was barely a fully grown dragon, you see. And I put love and effort in my work."

One day, as Starshifter was peacefully gazing at the beautiful stars in her favourite spot, the Parched Canyonwalks, it seemed like it'd be the last time she'll see them for half the month.
As she was resting her eyes, she was suddenly attacked. By whom? No one knew.
The one who had harmed the innocent Pearlcatcher ripped off her face and then her neck. Who would do such a thing?
Poor Starshifter screamed in agony. Crying for help as she tried to walk to the closest healer.
But it was hard.
The pain was everywhere.

Everyone around her were shocked. "She's bleeding so much! Someone, help her!" "Well, what kind of help do you think she needs? Come on now, carry them to the healer!"
Starshifter was paralyzed, slowly losing consciousness due to her spine getting attacked and due to blood loss.

She finally blacked out.
In her mind, she then appeared.
"Where am I? Why is it so dark?"
She then noticed some light gathering. Into what?
She watched it form into.... her favourite spot?
She saw her younger self, joyous and eager to learn about the weather. By seeing this, Starshifter cried as she watched her memories replayed.
"I'm sorry, younger me, it seems our adventure together might be over for now, huh? I just want you to know that.. we got to achieve our goal! We got to properly learn about what we loved. A-and.... we're professionals!"
Starshifter was drowning with sadness. Tears flooded from her eyes, her head was like an ocean.
She tried to touch the face of her younger self, though she knows it is but a mere imagination and it won't feel her touch anyway.
Her hands, trembling in sadness, finally got her hand to her younger self and put her head against it.
Warmth, she felt, as her "body" was so cold.
Suddenly, the "imaginary" younger version of Starshifter began to speak.
"Heya, big friend! I know it's a lot of things now that being older is a struggle, yeah? It's okay! We'll be able to learn and love it, right? Embracing it and always putting our heads up with hopes of conquering everything!"
Surprised, Starshifter cried more.
"No, no, no. It's not okay. I'm... I-I'm sorry, me. I know you want us to stay positive, but... complications happened. I just want us to be happy b-but... things seem to not go our way."
The imaginary young version seemed to look... sad.
"B-but, we can still do many things together, right, b-big friend?"
It started tearing up.
Starshifter flinched. She tried lightening up the mood.
"Hey, little guy, please.. d-don't cry for me, alright? I'll try to make things better, okay? You don't have to worry about it!"
"H-how can I not..?

Suddenly, everything got bright.
"Thank gods, she's finally awake!" "Are you okay?!"
Starshifter seemed to gain consciousness. She looked around her and it seems she was in the healer's den.
"Young one, it has been a week and 3 days since the accident. You've lost a lot of blood and it took me days to recover your muscle. Sadly, I must say I couldn't recover your skin. I truly am sorry, dear. Now, you're still in recovery. Please do not try to move a lot, your back hasn't fully healed."
Starshifter understood and stayed in the healer's den until she fully recovered.

Days had passed, maybe weeks? Who knows. Starshifter couldn't help but think of many things as she wanted to finally get back home.
And finally, after 2 weeks, she was discharged.

Starshifter finally got to feel the cold breeze after such a long time. She first went to the spot she always loved, looked down to the water, and tried to get a clearer reflection of herself.
Shocked, she was, as she saw her face missing her skin.
She tried to find something to cover her face and back, as she doesn't want and will never allow anybody to see her ruined face.

Finally, she found a bird skull, feathers and string. She made it fit her cloak. It seems that there's almost nothing for her in the world anymore.
She noticed it will rain later, and decided to shower in the scattered droplets of water.
She felt relief and thought it should be nice to stray away from other dragons from now on.

Now, Starshifter had nowhere else to go to or anyone to stay with.
Who knows if she would reveal herself to the world again? Will she continue her childhood dream?
Who knows if she actually died and that all of what happened after she "woke up" was but an imagination she made up for herself to escape the thought of her dying?
