Born to a minor noble family, Visellius never really felt that he belonged. The forest paths and the songs of birds were always his escape from court politics and aristocratic duties. As he grew older, his family began parading females (and eventually, males as well) before him, to no avail. None of the potential suitors appealed to him in the slightest. Ultimately, his parents decided that if he would not choose his own mate, they would choose one for him. At first, the Pearlcatcher was dismayed, but accepted the pairing. But as the time drew nearer, he became increasingly distressed. One misty morning, he slipped away into his forest retreat, and resolved not to return. It was difficult to transition from the lap of luxury to living off the land, but Visellius knew what he wanted; the forest had been his only love. In time, he seemed to become one with the woods, learned to speak with the birds and draw strength from the plants. On a sunny spring afternoon, Visellius saw another Pearlcatcher in his forest, and felt something he'd never felt before. He was drawn to her like a moth to a flame, and called out to her. She was called Beneficentia, and her swan companion had flown away into the woods. He enlisted the help of his feathered allies to find it, and asked her as she left to come back and see him again. She did, many times more, and soon Visellius found that he had another love besides the forest. |
