The Imperial Koi are based off of real koi fish - specifically the very popular Taisho Sanke variety. Taisho Sanke koi have a marble white base color with crisp orange spotting, and a black stepping stone pattern along their backs that accents the natural beauty of the white and orange. While these beautiful carp were originally a bland brown bred to be consumed, they are now considered among the most stunning members of fish communities thanks to a happenstance mutation that changed their coloration. Similarly, this dragon pair partners an iconic koi male with a humble female of simple color to create something beautiful.
