Balrog is completely mute, not speaking a work since he was a hatchling and now communicating almost solely through sign language and writing. Some say it's by choice, other presume a Serthis got their talons on him as a pesky child and fed him something vile--he did like to taunt and nip and bait monsters into a tussle, after all. Nobody really knows for sure, but he is able to snarl and roar, just not speak, so perhaps it is selective after all. Not that anyone's complaining, though; a shrill roar from the silent wildclaw is plenty enough for most threats to take the hint and flee from the territory.

When he's not on the job and needing to put on his terrifying front, Balrog is a big sweetheart. He's incredibly comfortable around his friends, preferring gentle company and lots of laughs and love over talk of work and violence. He tends to be incredibly lax when he's alone with Sakura and Sastrugi, even while theyre outside of clan borders, but he'll crack jokes with anyone who can read sign language. And around those who dont, for that matter--perhaps for the better, since those who know him well know that his sense of humor is better suited for college students and the red light district.

Balrog is a border guard, but sometimes, he finds quiet pleasure in travel at Sastrugi's side. For his own safety, and for the company on the long trip, Sastrugi will get Bal out of duties for a few days to escort him down to the the Southern Icefields on a diplomacy mission, and the silent soldier is happy to play the intimidation game by Sasu's side.

There's nothing like a cute girl for a fun time and someone to enjoy your sense of humor. He mentored Arevik for a while when she was still learning the ropes of combat, but as time went on he became more of a friend to share lonesome nights with. He'd had the start of feelings at one point, so he's glad she found a lover before it got too bad so he was able to nip his feelings in the bud and be happy for her happiness.
