The world swirled around the drake, body swaying unevenly as he attempted to orient himself. His paws almost stumbled, but he dug his claws into the ground. Soft, mossy earth beneath his paws: this was what he should be feeling. He had to hold onto that even as his vision waned, his head swarming with an ache that pulsed from the centre of his brain.
Hold on for dear life. He reiterated this to himself in his head, breathing fast as a fear began to set in. As much as he could, he took account of his surroundings: Tall, gnarled trees, their branches obscured in the twilight as the setting sun left him and his camp in shadows, the stone firepit in the centre was unlit at present, and the silhouette of the stone archway he came to investigate stood as silent and staunch as ever. Tiles of paved rock were scattered across the forest floor around him, and the rest of the detail was obscured within darkness.
His mind plunged into chaos, with each passing moment a new worry. It was difficult to string one single thought together in his head, each pulse of pain scattering mind and emotions in tow.
She is not yet here.
This hurts.
I'm cold.
Can't think.
Where can I run.
Where can I hide.
I cannot hide.
Niko closed his eyes, but the pain in his head only worsened, and deprived of vision, his claws began to lose grip on the world he was so desperately clinging to. His rising panic deepened, heart beating in his chest, energy building in his spine only to pool within, concepts of fight and flight clashing in his mind while his body buzzed with fear.
Between brief, shallow breaths he forced his eyes back open. Trees. Firepit. Archway. Even though the world moved in front of him, and his body couldn't maintain balance, he had to leave this place. He was too close.
He tentatively lifted a paw. It felt like his leg was falling through space as he took this single, part-step towards any direction that wasn't here. Eventually paw would touch terra firma again, and his claws would dig into the dirt beneath him as he continued with another leg, and another, and another. One step at a time.
He stumbled away into the forest at a snail's pace, he couldn't tell where he was going, he was satisfied at least if the stones, echoes of civilisation that once had been, were getting less frequent. If the archway were to slowly fading into the night.
But the pain would not reside, nor the fear, nor the turning of his stomach as the blurry visage of the dark forest around him moved within his vision. Nor the feeling in the back and front of his mind that she was, in fact, now here.
