ABOUT -

» Mariana started life as a simple water imperial hatched along the edge of the Fishspine Reef and the Great Trench. Her early days were spent disobeying her parents and diving off into the upper Trench, testing her own mettle and seeing just how far into the dark she dared to go. At first she would only go a few fathoms down. Then one day, she pushed herself, swim harder, push through the pressure, she found herself a full league down. Down where the water was so dark and cold it was immediately disorienting. Mariana found herself lost, unable to determine up from down and slowly being pulled by a current into even darker waters. She panicked. All the glory of conquering the Trench, all the half-cocked adventures planned in her head, gone in an instant. She tried desperately to free herself of this riptide. Swim out, swim out, swim out. but her fins would not, could not, escape the pull. And so she blacked out; from fear or exhaustion, she's not sure, but eventually the darkness overtook her lithe form and her mind.

» Had Mariana not been a water dragon, she likely would have drowned down there in deep, forsaking her life force to that of the Tidefather. But that was simply not the case for she had been born in this sea, forged by its ebb and flow, and so when she did eventually come to she was surprised to find herself in what appeared to be a medical clinic. More shocking still was the water goblin bouncing next to her on their toes, peeking to see if she had awoken. Now knowing she was lucid, the little goblin ushered her along down a hallway to a massive archway - so large that even the tallest Ridgeback would feel dwarfed swimming beneath. And though the chamber was dark, Mariana could make out the faintest outline of a tremendous dragon staring back at her.

» "When the eye looks away and the sea rages, protect the bay. For soon the First will rise again and sunset the modern age." The voice was nothing more than a whisper in her mind, deep and oddly comforting. She opened her mouth to speak to the dragon, The Dragon, but found herself getting tugged backwards toward the entryway. "Find me in the deepest place" it whispered in her mind, "and the darkest days will end." ...

» ... An encounter with the Tidefather was always rumored to occur only to the most adept oracles or oldest clans. Even those that prilgrimed to the Spiral Keep to join the ranks as scholars, warriors, or priests rarely got to see the great diety. For Mariana to have actually been in the same water, mere metres from one another, seemed so unlikely that her parents cast her out amongst the waves. It was blasphemous to claim an audience with the Tidefather when everyone knew you needed to be gifted with prophecy to do so, and Mariana had no gift.

» And so Mariana travelled. She visited maren outposts, swam with spiney whales and battled in the kelp forests. As she swam the sea her affinity to understand it's changes and tempraments improved. Often she would swim up to fisher dragons in boats to warn them of impending choppy seas so they don't get tossed overboard. It was one of those times that she encountered Zand, who had been in the process of building a terrible little shack on the side of a cliff. There was a storm on its way through and sure enough, come morning, Zand's little shack was now driftwood. She felt sorry for the guardian and set to helping him rebuild. Over the years she often came back to visit him and the mute fae Pilea, eventually ending up on the council of Zand's guild.

» Throughout all of her travel and encounters however, Mariana never forgot her prophecy. It tickled the back of mind constantly. She was always on a lookout ofr some kind of bay that needed protection, trying to determine what this "eye" was the Tidefather mentioned.Everytime the sea stormed she wondered if this was what he meant, but it never changed anything. Time passed and her concern waned, after all a prophecy could be years in the making, or lifetimes. But when the Crescendo Vortex stopped spinning and a great maelstrom raged across the sea Mariana knew. It was time. She struggled to get back to The Guild in time but she was too late. The old tavern was destroyed, dragons were missing. She found Zand and Pilea and vowed to help rebuild, just like before, this time in a safer place, a small bay she knew not too far away with plenty of space and a natural break wall to dampen the blows of the sea. And so Mingulay Bay was founded, a bay to protect.
