Magic Kid. Mostly Useless but Very Cute.

One of the eggs in Zest's first clutch was slow to hatch. Once it did, the little runt inside, the one of her children with the sweetest smile, simply refused to grow.

"Kids are supposed to grow, aren't they?" Zest asked Beige, one of the Elders of the lair.

Beige looked at the sweet-cheeked pink-shaded little round ball of a baby, and shook her head. "I only deal with beige children, dear. This one's far too... colorful."

"It happens sometimes," Orestes (who was old and somewhat wise) said, "when the child is blessed by Powerful Magic."

"You did it now," Beige said with a sigh. "You had to go and make him talk about 'Powerful Magic'."

"Let me tell you about Powerful Magic," Orestes continued.

The conversation, which was more of a monologue really, lasted for some time after that, while Beardsley nibbled on some of Orestes's priceless magical artifacts.

"So to sum it up," Zest finally said. "The kid is a bit magic?"

"That's a deeply inaccurate simplification," Orestes replied, as smoke the color of sunshine started to curl out from Beardsley's nose and ears. "Is your child eating my priceless magical artifacts?"
