that must have been another of your dreams — a dream of mad man moon

Logically, the egg must have settled against a rotten section of bark, fallen through the tree trunk, and rolled into the water. Logically, even as a hatchling, it shouldn't be hard to escape an egg and struggle to the surface of whatever water you've found yourself in. But logic doesn't help much if your egg is cracked and the water is rushing in, soaking your feathers, and your lungs have no idea how to deal with this situation, let alone your tiny, panicked brain.
The hatchling managed to burst the shell of her egg in one great heave and struggle into the total darkness above the water. Even her natural low-light vision was of no help here. She was alone, completely alone, and she did the only thing she knew how to do: cry herself to sleep.
She awoke some time later. The water that had just tried to take her life was now the only thing saving it, as she had no food, and the hatchling drank and drank until she was full. It didn't take long for her to recognize that the water had a hearty current, making escape unlikely, if not deadly.
By stretching out her tail and wings as far as they'd go, she was able to find a wall. It was rough; this was good. It meant water hadn't smoothed it out like the tunnels she'd careened through. She listened carefully to the soft plap plap of the water, judging how far she was from it, then slowly started to explore along the wall. Soon, she squeaked at the feel of something different. Despite her fear, she reached out once more and felt something soft and flexible: a mushroom. With no thought for her life, she popped it into her mouth.

Siyoh could never answer how long she lived in the tunnels. She knew that it had been a long time until she found the cluster of Glow Mushrooms, her only sustenance other than the hallucinogenic Mycena Mushrooms. It took "several visits" for her to acclimate to the light of the Glow Mushrooms, but she managed to overcome her fear and pain to eat a few, surprised when they helped her aching head more than the Mycena ever had. Without the ability to wash herself, as the current was too swift and her limbs too weak, the hatchling was unsurprised to find the phosphorescent mushrooms soon growing off her limp wings.
Varis, at least, knew he'd been down there for a week before he encountered her for the first time. Even his hooded lantern, the lowest light source he'd brought, made her weep and tremble in pain, and she found the sound of his voice unbearable. But this phenomenon, a dragon growing mushrooms from her hide, was just too good for him to pass up; so he took a breath and plunged himself into the silent darkness with her.
Communication was difficult, but eventually, he taught her speech; her first attempt at speech produced a whistling that sounded a little like "see-oh", so he started calling her Siyoh. Once he did, a whole world of possibilities opened before the little dragon. She had a name, she was a being, and life was no longer solely about her next meal or what the Mycena would tell her. Eventually, the more she understood, the more desperately Siyoh wanted to try to leave the caves. Varis, at this point, was happy to abandon his formal research to help this lost soul; it took weeks, as they sustained each other solely on her Glow Mushrooms, but they eventually found a trail of Deepmine pots that led to a pensive, soft-spoken clan of Snappers who helped them to the surface.
They worked towards the light for days, trying their best to ensure that Siyoh's eyes, weak from spending nearly her entire life underground, were left time to adjust. Suddenly, Varis was struck with a flash of inspiration; he dug around in his pack and pulled out a pair of thick, dark, glass goggles, the same ones he had used to enter the underwater cave systems, and snapped them over her head. After she got over the initial shock, she realized that she could tolerate the light with much greater success. The pair wandered for months just to experience the world, heading in no direction in particular; they just wanted to enjoy being alive. It wasn't long before they realized that just cutting off Siyoh's Mycena intake didn't actually stop the visions; she seemed to have a natural gift for prophecy. Varis stopped questioning it after the third time it saved his life.
Their path led them southeast until they happened across the Shifting Expanse. Siyoh wasn't a fan of the whole "open sun, giant desert" thing, but Varis assured her that there were tons of mushrooms in deserts. Siyoh acquiesced that yes, she did like mushrooms, and mushrooms liked her, so if the desert liked mushrooms she would likely like the desert. Varis... rolled with it. They were picked up quite luckily by Vitra and Bawx on patrol not long after they ran out of water, and at Siyoh's prophetic insistence, have stayed with the clan ever since.
