Biography

King Jursid
KmqpHdM.png
Art by Rluie

» The Pearlcatcher had never looked directly in the deep, chocolate eyes of love- for why should he? It had abused him, taunted him, and let Jursid hold its icy-cold, horribly frail hands before letting go, sending the future King tumbling into its darkest depths. It had never done anything but add misery to his sad soup of a life, a broiling mixture of anger and grief. Jursid wanted to side with revenge, to strike love down so it could rise no more, to relieve his burden of false hope- hope that started when he could barely stand on wobbly pillars of reassurance.
» When Jursid drew his first breath, it was one that reeked of hate and remorse. His parents despised every frail bone in his scrawny frame and every inch of his scaly coat, for he was everything but perfect.
» He was cast into the wild, left for the wolves to devour him down to his despised shell. Miraculously, Jursid survived. He was beaten, scratched, and mauled, but very much alive, scars of memories etched deep into his tiny soul.
» The wolves saw strength, prosperity, and courage within the mewling hatchling- qualities that they valued themselves. They took him in, teaching him the skills and survival techniques of the feral beasts, to distrust the skills of the dragon race. However, they could not teach him to let go of his past, could not convince him that he was a dragon no more.
» Eventually, Jursid escaped to the warm, open arms of civilization, battle scars disfiguring his snout and sinews rippling as he strolled into the heart of town. Immediately, a flock of love-struck females flocked to follow his path, cawing and crooning to him, lavishing him with praise and promises of fame and wealth should he take their talons in marriage.
» Their calls nagged at the back of Jursid’s mind, poking, prodding, and nudging their way through mountains of thought, plethoras of daydreams, and swirling blizzards of notions. Eventually, the Pearlcatcher snapped. He courted not one, but many females, always promising to present them a ring by the end of the first outing.
» However, the nagging persisted, reminding the Pearlcatcher of the aching, burning hole in his heart, of the parents he never had. Why should he show affection for these strangers, when his own progenitors themselves had been just as foreign? Would he marry, only to throw his offspring to the wolves just as he had been?
» Guilt, fear, and something else he would later come to recognize as embarrassment flooded Jursid’s shattered heart. Driven to the brink of insanity by grief, he made a decision- one which he would regret to the day he would lay, glassy eyed and motionless in his grave.
» Just as his parents had abandoned him, he convinced himself to jilt his lovers, always moving on to yet another. No one stood out to him as particularly special- except for Qimmiphu.
» Her deep, knowledgeable gaze seemed to penetrate Jursid’s stone heart, staring into his very soul. The Pearlcatcher found that he couldn’t hide behind his stony demeanor when he was around her- for she wasn’t afraid to get her talons dirty, always digging straight through flimsy walls of lies, conjured stories, and excuses.
» When the time came to leave her, Jursid couldn’t bring himself to do it. Instead, he proposed his hand in marriage- which Qimmiphu declined. She found him annoying, arrogant, and a coward who told nothing but fabrications and fantasies.
» “Let me see your real face,” she had snarled. “Stop hiding behind that made-up personality.”
» “I don’t know who I am,” Jursid replied. “All I know is that you’re looking at an outcast who was raised by wolves.” The Pearlcatcher faintly remembered a smile curling the corners of Qimmiphu’s lips as she whispered, “I accept your proposal.”
