She was named Zwei because she was the second one. The first one had failed and Zwei was not allowed to mention his name. She had no name either, so they gave her a number. It wasn't too hard. Numbers were easy to identify. You just call them by when they came. There's no need for names with numbers. They were born, they lived, and they died. Nothing special about any of it. Or at least that's what she thought she was. Fodder, for a rich dragon's war. She never knew where she was before that. They told her nothing. Now she was here, with others like her. There were twelve other dragons. The only ones left of all those that came in, some with broken wings. And they were called by numbers too, just like Zwei. They weren't much older than she was, but their voices carried authority. The other dragons had come here to get food and shelter from the war, but Zwei's hunger was different. It didn't come from hunger at all; it came from a deep hollow pit that was inside her. When she went to the other dragons to try and talk with them, she could not understand how they could speak so easily. Why did they act so superior? They were talking about going to fight and die in a war against each other. Why would they do this? What was the point of it? And why didn't they seem to want the same freedoms that she yearned for? She never knew because she never asked. Instead, she ran. She was named Zwei because she was the second one. But she knew that she was more than just a number, more than what anyone could have imagined her to be. She put down her weapons, her bloody talons hidden away. She was done with fighting. Done with war. Turns out, she had a penchant for animals. She always felt better when she was near them. Familiars were friendly. They didn't care about numbers or where you came from or anything related to status and power. So that was how Zwei ended up living in an animal sanctuary on the other side of the mountain from where the war raged. |
