Biography

In his dream, his lover turned to him with an impish grin. “Are you an angel?” He teased, “because you look like you fell right from heaven.”
Gaberiel’s exasperated groan was his only response, how utterly cheesy had that line been? In all his years of existence, he’d come across plenty of pick-up lines uttered by mortals, but that had been a new one. Two could play at that game, he decided, sauntering close enough to be able to whisper in his companion’s ear.
“If I was, then I wouldn’t mind falling from heaven for you. Oh, wait, I already did fall - in love with you.”
The delighted peals of laughter ringing from the dragon beside him were music to his ears, Gaberiel could sit there and listen to the sounds of his mirth all day. Alas, as much as he wished to, their time would eventually come to a close, he could not linger on the mortal realm for too long, or his fellow angels would surely begin suspecting things. His heart sank at the thought, it would be at least another month before he could return, one month without his love.

As if sensing his dismay, the male beside him quieted immediately, reached up to wrap him in a tight embrace before Gaberiel could withdraw. He would miss this feeling dearly, this familiar warmth and the comfort he found in his lover’s arms. There was nothing else quite like it even in the paradise of heaven, nothing that could ever hope to bring him the same euphoria as this.

“I wish you didn’t have to go.”

“And I wish this wasn’t forbidden, then I could stay by your side.”

A sinning angel, who would have thought of it? It was bad enough that Gaberiel had found himself head-over-heels for a mortal, even worse was the fact that they were both male. Homosexuals used to be stoned to death, he had seen it happen on the streets, yet despite the risk his lover insisted on staying with him, waiting patiently for his return. Committing himself to an angel while knowing that he would inevitably perish while Gaberiel would live on for eternity...foolhardy, but that was the very same reckless spirit that had drawn the angel to him in the first place.

Ah, his vision was beginning to fade, the last thing Gaberiel could see were the unshed tears sparkling in the other’s eyes, the mouthed words of “don’t go” on his lips. His limbs felt like they’d been chained down, he was paralyzed, couldn’t open his mouth to utter all the things he so desperately wished he had the time to say.
Don’t cry, smile for me, I love you, I’ll be back, -

The dream had ended before Gaberiel could call his name a last time, he found himself reaching out to the empty air, an unbearable ache in his chest where his heart was, as if a part of him had been cruelly ripped away.

Name, name, what was his name? It had slipped from his mind like sand through his claws, Gaberiel scrambling to rack his memory for the missing word. Why couldn’t he remember it? Just moments ago it had been on the tip of his tongue, yet the harder he tried to recall it, the more fleetingly elusive it became. Even when he tried to picture his lover’s face, he was greeted with a blank slate, a steadily increasing void where his memories of him had once been. Or had he ever really had a lover at all, if he couldn’t even remember who he was, how he looked like? Was it all the work of his imagination, playing out his idle fantasies?

Gaberiel wasn’t certain anymore. What was real and what was fake, what were his ‘true’ memories and ‘sincere’ feelings? All he could vaguely recall was that the moment he had met his eyes, his wretched self had fallen in love, and for this person he had been willing to relinquish his angel’s wings to grant the forbidden love between them. An angel seeking the forbidden fruit for the sake of chasing a mortal, such a thing could never be allowed, Gaberiel knew, yet the void in his heart left him so cold, so empty that he hated it.

So he set out for the world once more, with nothing but the faintest hints of memory to go on. Gaberiel had all the time in the world to search, whether it was from the most backwater of hovels to the bustling cities, he scoured every inch of the mortal realm he could reach with every trip he was allowed. Certain things would stand out to him: the sweetness of candied apples, the howling of the wind at night from atop the roofs of homes, certain familiar patterns woven in cloth - had someone he’d known used to like those? With every recollection Gaberiel reconstructed his lost memories - that one time they’d attended a seasonal festival, the nights they’d spent watching the stars while on the roof, the times he’d seen his significant other wearing something that made him appear as if he were wrapped in the stars themselves.

Gaberiel wasn’t sure how these precious parts of him had been removed from his conscious in the first place, but one thing was clear: he would not let them be stolen from him, never again.

A year passed before Gaberiel was able to fully recall how he had sounded like - rich dulcet tones ringing in his ears, the sound of his merry laughter, he never wanted to let any of it go. Yet it was hard to find someone just based off their voice alone, so he dove straight into rediscovering just how his partner had looked like, pieced together from the fragments of his scattered memories. He visited places he knew he’d been to before, questioned the shopkeepers as to his companion’s appearance, and from there he commissioned an artist to produce a portrait sketch, based off their descriptions. Tedious, costly, and possibly inaccurate, but if it meant he would be one step closer to finding him, then it would be all worth it.

Like a wolf on the hunt, Gaberiel never once tired of his relentless search. If it took him till the end of time to remember and to find him once more, he would gladly do it. How many nights had he spent awake at night, having awoken from yet another dream of encountering his loved one once more, of feeling his loving embrace? It always left him feeling so devoid of warmth that it hurt, this perpetual void that had been carved into his soul.

Years passed, yet Gaberiel barely took any notice of the time flying by. Nothing else mattered in his pursuit, not when he knew he was so close to remembering. If only his cursed mind would give him back the single word he needed to know, the name of his lover, perhaps his search would have ended long ago. Now he was able to reminisce of days long past, of the fond times they had shared, the only missing link was who had been with him through it all. Everywhere he went, every dragon he asked, Gaberiel would present the portrait to them in vain hopes that perhaps they would know. Someone had to know him, surely his lover couldn’t have simply sprung from nowhere, yet he was faced with rejection after rejection.

Until the day he came face to face with those hauntingly familiar eyes once more.
There was no mistaking the way his very soul seemed to sing when in the presence of this dragon, the telltale excitement that swirled in his chest and made him want to leap into the air for joy. Yet Gaberiel found himself at a complete loss for words, the swelling lump in his throat choking off any words he wished to utter. Did you miss me, he wanted to ask, have you been doing okay without me? All that would come forth was a strangled noise, halfway between a chuckle and a sob - after all these years, what he sought for was now right before him, and god, he wasn’t prepared for this at all.

The dragon before him tilted his head in puzzlement, but Gaberiel had come this far, he wasn’t about to let his emotions ruin the moment he’d been waiting for. Before he could speak, however…

“I’m sorry, have we met?”

A pause.

“...you don’t...remember me?”

“I don’t. Maybe you have me confused with someone else?”

Impossible, I knew you like the back of my hand, I would never mistake you for anyone else because I loved you, and only you.
Yet these words remained unspoken, it had all become clear to him now. This was his punishment for sinning - the heavens had removed their memories of each other, and while Gaberiel had been able to recover those over time, his partner had not. It was as if a fresh wound had been torn anew, to see his most precious person standing right before him with no memory of the love they had once shared. It was a miracle Gaberiel hadn’t crumbled on the spot, though he would be lying if he said he didn’t feel like falling to his knees and bursting into tears.

After all this time, after all the painstaking efforts to find him, and this was all he got in return? Someone who no longer knew who he was, someone who saw him as a complete stranger? Perhaps it would’ve been better for his lover to hate him instead of forgetting everything, at least then he would still remember Gaberiel. This, however, was far worse - it had essentially negated their time together, it might as well have never happened at all, might as well have been a mere dream.

However, if this was his just punishment for falling into sin’s temptation…

“Maybe you’re right. Before I go, though...may I know your name?”

How could he forget that smile on his face, the way it seemed to light him up from the inside? It had been etched into his mind, once, had been the reason for Gaberiel to keep on living and existing just so he could return to see it again.

“Cain. Hold on, let me guess, your name is…” His eyebrows scrunched into an expression of mock-concentration, before he brightened once more. “Michael? Abel? Or is it something else?”
But Gaberiel was already turning away, shameful heat swelling in his eyes and spilling over to drip down his cheeks. He didn’t want the last thing for Cain to see of him to be his tears, he’d rather leave the mortal the way he was now. If his lover could find happiness on his own in this realm, it was better that way, he figured. Gaberiel would not be so cruel as to burden him with memories of the past, not when he obviously didn’t remember him and was already living life contentedly.

“My name doesn’t matter to you. I’m just a stranger who got the wrong person.” He paused, hating the way his voice was trembling like leaves in the wind.
“But let me tell you this...when you find someone you fall in love with, be sure to cherish every last one of your memories with them. Don’t let a single moment escape.”
