Some say it’s difficult to be a prince. I laugh at that. Some say I was blessed. I laugh at that too. I’ve always thought I’m somewhere in the middle. They grey, murky area that no one likes to talk about.

I will one day rule an icy domain, filled with nothing but snow and cold. Most young dragons don’t survive the chill, and having royal blood didn’t make my family an exception. My parents had five children, all of them now dead, before I came around. My life was celebrated when I grew passed the age where the cold was a threat, and many of the citizens regard me as the Prince of Ice. My survival wasn’t the sole contributor to that title. It would be silly to ignore the eyes I was unfortunately blessed with. ‘Prophecy Child’, they called me. Someone dug up an ancient prophecy, written in a time too old to know its age. A prince with eyes of ice would bring frost to the land of heat and heat to the land of frost. No prophecies had been fulfilled yet, and I doubted any would be fulfilled. I don’t rely on fleeting hopes when survival is at stake.

I slowly dragged my finger along the inch of snow that had piled up on the railing to the balcony, gazing out over the village once again. Everyone was bundled inside, trying desperately to stay warm in their rotting wood shacks. The palace -though much larger, warmer, and better in any and every sense- wasn’t much better. At least it was made of stone, protected from the natural decay and damage caused by the unrelenting snowstorms. I glanced up at the cloudy skies with a small sigh. “Prophecy child, huh?” I whispered softly, about to look back down but then something caught my eyes. A glimmer in the sky, as if the clouds were fabric and someone had just cut a small slit through them. I squinted.

A ringing sound shot through my head louder than thunder. “Ack-” I muttered and cursed, stumbling back a step and slipping on the ice. My body was on the floor with a hard thud, and the piercing ringing noise only grew. I didn’t even register it as my guards rushed out to get me. No, I was focused on the sky again.

The rip in the clouds was gone, but something glimmering, golden, was falling down like a shooting star. I was taken inside just as I watched it disappear in the snow covered land, not far from the village.
...

I had been made to lie down for a bit after I took the small fall, and thankfully the ringing had subsided after a few minutes of closing my eyes. Now, however, as i bundled up in the warmest furs we had, I was on a mission to see what had fallen out of the sky. I hadn’t told anyone of my observation yet, as I didn’t need the guards worrying for my sanity nor anyone else flanking me as I went out searching. Alone time was rare enough as it was.

After finishing tightening the straps on my clothing to ensure it wouldn’t blow off in the biting wind, I stepped out of the palace’s large stone entryway and into the snow covered realm that my family ruled. I slowly walked out onto the snow then looked in the direction I saw the object fall. It was probably covered in snow by now, and it would take some searching, but I didn’t balk at the challenge.

It took nearly a half hour to reach the area where the thing had fallen out of the sky. My arms and legs were almost coated with a thin layer of snow, but I was unbothered as I glanced back towards the palace and estimated how far I’d gone. I cast my eyes out over the area, peering through the frost filled air. Just like anywhere else, it was just filled with snow and ice and- there. A shimmer of… gold? I blinked as if to try to cast away an illusion, but no, the fleck of gold was still there. I beelined to it, holding my breath as I approached. The snow was disturbed around it, but the thing -an indiscernible buried lump- was coated in ice already. I stretched out my arm to brush it off, my curiosity peaking, and then my heart stopped.

“Oh gosh.” I threw out my wings, throwing out a gust of wind to blow off the snow from the dragon before gently touching the poor soul. He felt so, so cold, too cold, but he was breathing. Barely. I fumbled to take off my coat and wrap it around him before picking him up and shifting him onto my back. “Hang in there, alright?” I muttered, already trying to run back over the snow. I needed to get back now to try to give this man any hope of survival.

Too long. It took too long to get back to the palace, where guards greeted me with a flurry of motions. I couldn’t stop myself from snapping when a guard insisted that I let the male go—I don’t know what had come over me, but I wouldn’t let anyone touch him as I rushed him down to the fire pits, our source of heating in the palace. I skipped two stairs with each step down the spiraling staircase, a bit of relief sparking in me with I felt the warmth and saw the flickering of the bonfire circled by rocks. I didn’t hesitate to set the stranger down right up next to the flames as soon as I could, and only then did I take the time to look around. The servant tending the fires had startled and the guards were right behind, their chests heaving as they stumbled down after.

“My prince, I- uh-”

“I found him in the snow, bare and frozen,” I interrupted softly, finally looking down at the skydancer I saved. A beautiful male, golden sun kissed scales and loosely outfitted with silks and… armor? He didn’t even look like the people around here, he wasn’t even close to the soft blues and greys and whites and occasional purples.

I lifted my claws to his chin, turning his head. There were snowflakes on his eyelids, slowly melting under the warmth of the fire. His chin was a glimmering orange, prettier than anything I had ever laid eyes on. I ran my hand along his neck, gently pressing on his skin until- there. A soft pulse, barely there but present nonetheless. He might just make it. “Go get a nurse, and warm blankets. A hot drink, too, if you will,” I commanded quietly, and all but two of the guards turned and went back to carry out my orders. I shot the remaining dragons a look, but they were firm on staying there to do their jobs, unfortunately.
