Even at Gaoler standards, I'm scary. Terrifying even. If you saw a hulking mass with sharp antlers and fangs and oozing chasms for eyes you'd run away too. I get it. But it doesn't make it hurt any less. I try to keep my fur over my eyes, hoping that those around me don't notice how horrifyingly disgusting I seem to be. I feel disgusting and Shade-infested, even though I can smell that I'm not. I'm surly being punished for the sins of my ancestors. Or this is just a cruel joke. I stand post at the cells located in the deepest part of the prison. Goop drips from my eyes as a slowly pace, dragging my feet with every step. Sometimes I wonder if the reason I’m post here is because the others think I’m synonymous to the Shade too. Whispers float about me, but I’ve learned to ignore them. I became an overseer quite a while ago. I’m used to it by now. Snarls and growls come from the shadows and I snap my jaws at them. They quiet down, but only for a moment. I guard some of the strongest manifestations the Shade took, locked away in cells. Thick chains are what keep them from banging up against the bars and lashing out. “Don’t you think you should’ve gone mad by now?” A small, tiny voice whispers. I try to ignore it, but it was much clearer than the rest. “The overseer before you didn’t last a month, don’t you wonder why you’ve lasted years?” The tiny voice continued before I finally turn to the cell it came from. It was a small hatchling, looking to be barely older than a day. At least that was what the Shade wanted me to believe. “I know why I’ve lasted so long,” I respond gruffly, about to move on. “You’re part of us. We have a connection,” The hatchling says softly, and for some reason I walk closer to the cell to get a better look. The sounds and whispers in the background fade as my attention focuses on the hatchling. I turn my head so a piece of fur falls into my eyes. “I don’t care what you have to say.” The hatchling laughed, the sound artificially light and bubbly. “Then why did you pause?” Before I had a chance to react, claws grabbed my face, hard enough to draw blood, and I was yanked closer. The hatchling had morphed into a shadowy figure, almost like a dragon but… tainted. It’s colors were darker than obsidian, and it’s eyes held more malice than any beastclan could. I pulled out of the Shade’s grasp, but that only caused it to rake it’s claws over my jaw. Blood dripped down my chin and I watched as the Shade licked its fingers. “Don’t forget I’m not the one in bars. Know your place,” I snapped, but the Shade just chuckled. “Know yours.”
...
I had gotten someone else to take over the shift while I headed back home. Blood had soaked into my fur by the time I pried open the door to my home, not much more than a small cave in the side of the snow covered mountain above the prisons. I let out a sigh and walked to the mirror -or, what used to be a mirror, as it had shattered one day during a particularly bad storm and now the pieces were shabbily taped up on the wall- and examined the claw marks over my chin and throat. |

Wishes Buried In Prayer
Weep amongst shadows
Clutch broken, black rose
Long for a prose
From one who knows
Sleep in the hollow
Beside dying sparrow
Scream and wallow
Fear shall follow
Glance of a widow
Winds shriek and billow
Have might of a minnow
Lack of a hero
Shattering pleas
Jingling keys
Desperate ease
Longing to please
Chase away scare
Leave talons bare
Lower your glare
Whisper a prayer

His looks may
fill you with fear
His eyes might
disgust you
His fangs show
What a demon can look like
You might feel in distress
but looks don't show the inside.
The chains on him
feel as if he is being pulled
He weeps from this curse
His anger rises from his ancestors
Yet now I am still alive.
Fighting to show.
I am not what you seem
For I am... Sannom.
