Biography
“This is why alchemy exists," the boy said. "So that everyone will search for his treasure, find it, and then want to be better than he was in his former life.
Lead will play its role until the world has no further need for lead; and then lead will have to turn itself into gold. That's what alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.” ― Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist |
DRATHEAS ALCHEMIST | Leader ▲ Founder ▲ Protector "What a handsome dragon!" the patrons of Tangled Magic Hatchery exclaimed upon seeing the beautiful coat of Dratheas' father. "You must sire beautiful hatchlings." "As a matter of fact, I have several gorgeous children birthed here in the shifting expanse. My youngest son at the moment should be around here somewhere...." "Can we try again Master Baldwin? Little Dratheas begged, watching the old bogsneak as he puttered about the lair, adding ingredients into a large, bubbling cauldron. Other, more skilled interns handed him this and that by way of ingredients as Dratheas followed the alchemist around. "Shouldn't you be getting home, little one?" Baldwin asked with a light chuckle. "Please," the imperial begged, and offered a wide smile. "One day, I'll be bought up and nobody will ever let me play." "One day, you will make a fine alchemist," he corrected. "Alright little one, hand me the copper now." The young imperial did as he was told and watched with enchanted delight as the old bogsneak's brew congealed into a shimmering mass. "Say hello, little one," Baldwin said. "Hello," Drath whispered, and the mass winked at him and gurgled a laugh in reply. In the eyes of the young imperial, days like this could have lasted forever. He had a lust for knowledge, but something beyond that. He yearned to take what he soaked up from texts and scrolls, from the mouth of the old brewer that kept the cauldron bubbling at all hours in the marketplace, and apply it to something tangible, something real. He loved the idea that he could take common junk from dens like rocks and sand, old bones from past meals and even a water-logged boot and make it into something... magical. There was something to be said for the way a day behind a simmering pot could make him feel. It was a powerful feeling, and yet a vulnerable one, one in which he could stare down into the gurgling stew and realize how small he was in the grand scope of the land. As an imperial he might have been a sizeable dragon but when one puts in the perspective of the gods looking down on their own creations well, did it really matter all that much what he did or didn't do? Take breeding for example. Dratheas came from a long line of hatchery dragons. His parents were carefully raised, their genes perfected, their manes groomed. They were bred only with each other, keeping the lines pure as their offspring were sold off to the highest bidders. Some of his brothers and sisters found equally doting clans to call their own. Some of them were much less fortunate. Drath though? Drath wanted something different, and perhaps it was his awareness of his own insignificance that made it so. He wasn't against breeding, no especially as he matured he saw how his parents could fall in love and turn that into something worthwhile. It was a means to an ends, he supposed, and he wasn't opposed to a mate. He simply knew that he also wanted another cause, and that was to create something....more. After all, he'd already formed life, taking a shape of his blobby familiar, and what was next? He would reform his alchemy and make more, make wonderous things, and in time he would use them to help protect the two little nocturnes who took him into their own... and all the other lost dragons who were found along the way. Perhaps he had a sense of duty, or perhaps it was the look on the little nocturne's face when they first ran into each other. Either way, Drath assumed his role as leader and protector with grace. The nocturnes bring him trinkets to melt down for ingredients, the fiery little pearlcatcher keeps the forge hot and his worthy adversary, Ridley, brings in the larger items. They have the pastels for selling and the tundras to keep the little ones from getting out of hand and even someone to watch out for the familiars and that odd coatl that doesn't seem to speak plain dragon. Yes, it seems Drath found himself charged with an unusual cast of characters and he does his best to bring out the magic in all of them, just like in h is recipes. |
