“I touch the fire and it freezes me. I look into it and it's black. Why can't I feel? My skin should crack and peel. I want the fire back.”

"When a pearlcatcher loses their pearl, they lose their life essence, their identity," Chance's father's voice echoed in her ears as she watched the scolding magma liquify her most prized possession. "Keep hold of your pearl, hang onto it forever, for without it you are nothing and nobody... even to us."

Tears filled the pearlcatcher's fiery eyes as she watched the rest of her pearl simply... vanish. What was she to do now? To her family, she was no longer kin, despite the protests of her mother. To her friends? Could she even have those if she was nobody? She was lost.

She didn't stand a chance.

When Chance was born of the flames of the Great Furnace she was just a wide-eyed little hatchling, ready to take on all that Sornieth had to offer. She was revered as a great beauty, once, and mentored in forging and metalwork. She was a hard worker, dedicated to her studies and her craft with an eye for small details. The flames spoke to her and she was able to craft beautiful armor and the finest of swords. One would think this would be enough for any young dragons. Yet, there was a side of her that Chance that always adventure.

She found kinship in a like- minded dragon, a hyperactive spiral by the name of Freya. The little flameling dragged Chance into all sorts of trouble, and the pearlcatcher went willingly, eager to make her mark on the Ashfall Waste. They would trail the edges of the waste, meeting all manner of dragons. They soon made friends, meeting up with another spiral from the Frigid Floes who would later come to be Freya's mate. She never knew that their antics would lead to her losing her pearl until it was too late. By all means, a pearlcatcher losing their pearl should be accompanied by some epic tale. She wishes she could claim they were being chased by the beastclan hoardes or sent careening over a cliff, but in the end the story boils down to a simple choice, to save her pearl or save her friend.

She chose to save Aster from the smoldering heat of the waste, and her life was never the same again. Disowned, outcast from her own clan she needed to find a new home. Eventually, like so many other lost dragons did, she found her way here to the Shifting Expanse, where then-small collection of misfits took her in and gave her shelter in the abandoned quarry. Back then, they were just the pairs of nocturnes and imperials, and for a long time Chance felt out of place and alone. That is, until Freya and Aster arrived, her friends having left home to join her amongst the scrub.

Initially, she thought nothing much of the gesture, too lost in her own self- destruction. She followed orders without question and was tasked with fire working when the clan's gadgets and creations required some welding and metal melding. In time, she found herself healing and settling in, grateful for the company of her friends and one dragon in particular.

When Chance first turned to Ridley it was from a place of pain and loneliness. The imperial, who had been part of the clan before they had found her, made his intentions clear from the start. Their friendship and more was casual at first, a mutual need for comfort that turned into something more. As the fire in her heart rekindled, so did Chance's passion and drive, allowing her to grow into a productive and invaluable member of the clan and bring light to Ridley's darkened heart.
