Queen of the Lair
Born of the Gods

God Born

While the whole of Sornieth is governed by the eleven main deities, the True Gods, each clan is guided by its own minor god - which in turn serve one of the True Gods.

When a minor god comes to be, they are followed by the birth of a Godborn dragon. Those singular beings know no parents, neither have they known infancy like most hatchlings. Dragons born of the gods spring into being fully formed, and ready to create a new clan for themselves.
While the godnborn can often hear the voice of their patron god for a while as they seek guidance in founding their clan, as time goes by and the clan prospers others might begin to hear the voice of their patron deity. Those chosen ones go to be high priests, interpreters for the gods that decide matters in the clan.

However, even if no longer a direct servant of their patron deity, a godborn dragon is considered the legitimate and indisputable leader of the clan. To depose a godborn is to challenge the favor of the gods.
While there are tales of lairs that have prospered under the leadership of foreign dragons, many a clan has been abandoned and led to ruin without a ruler.

Rightful Ruler

Cassandra was the first dragon of her clan, and together with her now exalted mate she struggled to create a safe place where her subjects could prosper.

Starting out her life as a Guardian, she trained as a fighter in order to protect her clan against intruders and gather treasure from the beastclans that were constantly at war with them. Back at the beginning her clan owed fealty to the Flamecaller, and times were though.
After almost an year of constant struggles and after many a dragon leaving to serve the Flamecaller rather than face the constant fight for survival, Cassandra defected and moved with her clan to foreign lands.

Under the guidance of her patron deity and the Icewarden, the clan finally prospered. There was treasure to keep them all fed, and as the clan expanded many exotic dragons came in, bringing their trades and riches with them.
But it was not without a cost. The price for their freedom was her mate, that to this day serves the Icewarden.

As the sole leader of the clan and guided by a patron that heavily favored the females of most species, the clan became a matriarchal society.
Most females were chosen, and then acceptable mates were procured for them. Mated pairs were chosen by their patron to breed the strongest bloodlines and the ones most valorous for other clans – for while many freely left to fight for and worship their gods, many others left to join different clans. For the loss of a valuable member the original clan would demand that a sum of gold or valuables be given in exchange for the loss of their member’s services. So in strengthening their bloodlines, the clan prospered in sending their offspring far and wide to serve among new clans.

After the loss of her mate, Cassandra refused to have another as her equal in ruling. She took consorts, and while she may indulge Agamemnon, her current one, she is the sole ruler, and the one to finalize all decisions within the clan.

As the clan prospered Cassandra used her ever growing riches to buy magic scrolls capable of modifying one’s nature.
Now a Skydancer, she retained part of her strength from her guardian days, evident in her impressive size – she is bigger than all but the imperials in her clan. And despite being queen, Cassandra prides herself in leading all attacks and excursions to gather treasure for her clan.
She is the leader of her female pack of warriors, though there have been rumors that a male might have been training in secret, despite her orders.

A Hard, Shiny Surface

After transitioning to a Skydancer Cassandra became extremely vain about her appearance. She enjoys things of beauty, and surrounds herself with treasure and dragons that reflect to her the wealth and prosperity of her clan.

Despite her cold and vain attitude towards others, she is deeply concerned about her clan and constantly strives to improve on their lair. She struggled for long to create a place where others might feel safe and might thrive, and she’ll do anything to keep it.

After seeing many friends being driven to servitude to the gods she is wary of their favors, and has a hidden, deep dislike towards the priests for their part in executing orders even she can’t circumvent.

Exalted Returned

Being sent to serve the gods as an exalted dragon is a high honor among most clans, but all dragons know that, once made, the decision to serve one’s gods is permanent and irrevocable.

That is, with a few exceptions.
As the years went by, more and more of the Godborn left their clans to serve the gods. Famine, a small territory, instable politics or simply a whim of the gods led thousands to abandon the only home they ever knew to fight for the deities that had birthed them.
However, those left behind were left bereft, unsettled and without a ruler.

The chaos that ensued led the gods, after much deliberation, to allow for the return of the exalted ones. Only the Godborn would be allowed to return to their homes, and only once would such mercy be granted.

Kings

The clan was in an uproar at the king’s return. While few remembered the days when both Kyle and Cassandra were in power, many of the clan’s dragons, who came to the clan after the king’s exaltation, were loyal to Agamemnon.

At first nothing more than a figure to appease the council and with no sway or social standing, the royal consort has risen through the ranks to be a respected leader and warrior.
Often being called to rule when the queen was away, the male was regarded highly by the clan, and the clan was torn in a battle of loyalties between the legitimate king and the one they followed by choice.

Even more torn was Cassandra herself. While the queen had adamantly refused to have another mate after Kyle left, the years mourning his loss didn’t erase the fact that the clan needed its leaders, and so to keep the power dynamics stable and the council appeased Cassandra conceded to take a consort.
No one but Kyle would be king of the clan they had started together, and the title would go to no other after his passing.
Wary, the female resigned herself to playing pretend for the good of her clan, and accepted Agamemnon as he was chosen by the gods as her new mate.

Years passed, and the young skydancer proved himself loyal as well as reliable. With time the queen grew to depend on him as much as she allowed herself to, and her companion was content to support her and rule from the sidelines, never stepping in as king, but holding power of his own nonetheless. When Kyle suddenly came back it left hanging the question of who would be the rightful king, and whether Agamemnon would be even allowed to stay in the clan, once his usefulness had come and gone.
With a broken heart Cassandra accepted the fact that, regardless of the gods’ decision, she would lose one mate at the cost of another.

Determined to stake his claim and take back his mate and clan, Kyle was unprepared by the support his adversary received. Agamemnon seemed truly appreciated by the council as well as the other clan members. Worse, he seemed to have won over the queen as well as his peers in the decades that the king was gone.

The clan was Cassandra’s life, and she would do anything to see it thrive.
Kyle had no such qualms – he cared little for the strangers around him, but he loathed the idea of hurting the only mate he ever had. What he proposed was unusual – and shocking to the council – but to keep his mate, Kyle was willing to share her with the other male.

The arrangement worked, and the clan saw a new era of prosperity like never before under the rule of the trio.
While matters of succession are still confusing at best, the three have fallen into a system that works well for all. Kyle and Cassandra are the official rulers of the clan, and the ones to represent it on all diplomatic dealings. Without a real claim to the throne, Agamemnon manages matters in their absence and deals with internal affairs since, while not recognized as a member of royalty, the member has earned the respect of his peers – and the title of Commander when dealing with official matters, as the royal court is as confusing nowadays as any succession lines.
