They say he is a creature of the dark, and yet he talks to the stars. He whispers in a language lost to the stellar sprites that flit around his body and they whisper back, not in a dragon tongue but in a magic language of their own. The stars are he, and he is they. He speaks for them, and yet they never speak for him. Of the many beings of Sornieth, gods and dragons and unholy beasts, they speak to him alone.

Dragons come to him and ask him names. What is the name of the one who will betray me? What is the name of the one who will love? Who will my children be exalted to, and their children’s children after them? He knows those names, and knows their futures—he has them written on the walls of his cave. There they sit for all to read, but for the fact they are not: they wrestle with each other, half-alive and entangled in an inky blackness that matches their master’s murk of midnight sky. What have the stars foretold, the clan demands. He smiles, shakes his head and says they told him you would ask a lot of questions.

He doesn’t mind that he must answer. He only minds that they ask. So many questions to he, star-seer that they call a sage, and yet not one has wondered why they are here. Why they are learning. How best to serve those around them—they mainly wish to serve themselves. He loves them, he wants the best for them and yet they take so much. He asks the sky why his leader Tianhou demands what service she does, and hears its answer in a long-dead tongue: They believe. She deceives. She wants to take my place as the heavens.

And so he hears. And so he despairs. And so he tells his fireflies, and begs the sky to say no more.
