When Helios scraped his way out of his egg, pushing himself desperately into the nest, the lair filled with a searing light.

If his ears had popped earlier to accept the noise from his parents, he might have heard his mother gasp, the bows wrapped around her torso shaking along with her unsteady breaths. “Does he…?” he would have heard her whisper to a larger dragon next to her, wrapped protectively around his son.

He opened his eyes earlier than most dragons. His mother theorized that he was eager to see the sun.

When his eyes finally open, his mother stares into searing sunlight. Her eyes close instinctively, and she has to force herself to look her son in the face. Blindness would be worth it, she thinks, to see her handsome hatchling as he gets his first glimpse of the sky. But he doesn’t blind her. The light is sharp but warm, and it sends joy coursing through her veins as she bears witness to a representative of the Lightweaver herself, her son.

Like the Light Mother herself, he can’t sit still, prowling for adventure, entranced with the dark.

“Helios! It’s time to get going!” Sunflower says, just three days later, as she tries to show him how to hunt in a nearby cave. She beckons him with a flick of her tail, but he stays still, poking at a dark beetle scuttling across the ground. It climbs onto his paw and he waves it around, until the beetle slams against the wall with a sickening smush.

When he looks back at the cave entrance, where his glowing mother once was, she is gone.

He spends what feels like a season in that cave, but it can’t be that long, because he still feels miniscule when he finally sees another dragon. It’s huge, with armor plastered all over its dark body. The dragon stares at him for a moment, unspeaking, before slowly dipping its snout down and picking Helios up gently by the scruff of his neck. “Stay still,” he grunts when Helios tries to wiggle, but he wouldn’t have been able to escape even if he’d continued. He’s been surviving on a diet of beetles and dirt.

He passes out.

When he wakes up, there’s another dragon floating in front of him, and he’s laying on something soft. She’s smaller than him, but has old eyes and there’s something about her that implies that she’s ancient, a higher being in some way or another. “Lilith,” she says without him having to ask, which is good, because he’s not sure his voice works anymore after so little contact.

Clan Crimson isn’t too bad, actually. He misses his parents dearly, but he stops crying himself to sleep after a few weeks, and he starts to grow fond of the Imperial dragon that had saved him from the cave, who’s still so much bigger than him even as he grows, filling out into the form he was meant to inhabit. He befriends a Bogsneak, who’s skin shimmers when it rains. His parents seem like a memory escaped, something that may have existed at some point but doesn’t anymore. He doesn’t see them again for months.

When he does, it’s like a dream. His mother is beautiful and he’s almost his father’s size, and they wrap their wings around him as if he’s still a hatchling. Behind them, Lilith floats, a speck of dust compared to the monsters next to her.

And maybe a while ago, he would have gone back with them. He can’t remember much of Clan Istredal, but he knows that it was good, and that they took care of him well. He was a King in that Clan, nearly worshipped for his eyes. Here, he’s just another dragon, a dragon with a tendency to stand in the light. Nothing special in a place where the leader is two feet long but could still tear him to shreds.

“I want to stay,” Helios tells his parents, and they nod, like this was something that they were expecting. He loves them, wants to see them often, but they’re not what he needs. He wonders when he started thinking of Clan Crimson as his family, instead of his birth Clan. He wonders when Sunflower stopped being his mother and Lilith took over the role, a silent protector.

Maybe neither of them are his mother at all, he thinks, as another burst of sunlight streams down from the heavens.
