Roman Taupe
Owner of Grove and Grotto
(Caregiver)

Our hatchlings have never been in better hands

Roman Taupe is the son of Feud Royal but born to Bright Berry, not Luna Platinum, therefore part of the royal extended family but not of the current royal line. Because of his tangible but small connection to the royal line, he never felt at home at court. Throughout his youth he spent a good deal of time outdoors, the first chance he got, he made it more permanent. He moved out of the castle to live amongst the forest on the outskirts of the castle grounds.

Living in the forest, meant he had to keep on the move, allowing for him to discover new food resources and to keep out of the castle's guests way. He started venturing deeper into the forest, spending days exploring unseen parts while he spent nights sleeping under the stars. It was on one of his more investigative days when he stumbled upon a glen housing a gigantic willow tree. The top crested the tallest part of the canopy and still, the willow's leaves drooped to touch the ground. Its trunk was larger than any of the townhouses in the village and had thick roots snaking out in every direction. Behind the tree was a small pond, brimming with life and thickly surrounded by plants.

As soon as Roman had stepped into the glen, he felt a strange sense of belonging that he had never felt before. Walking forward to investigate, Roman can see the trunk covered in flowering vines of all different colours and at the base of the tree, he could see a hollow that was perfectly dragon-sized. He gathered up his things, feeling like this would be where he would make his permeant camp, inside the small hollow. But when he stepped inside, instead of it being a snug fit, there was seemingly endless space. The tree was perfectly hollow inside with many nooks letting the sunlight in above. He could see the space being a perfect home for those yet to find their forever homes. As night fell, Roman set up camp in the hollow willow tree, sitting in a patch of moonlight with a sketchbook. Hours passed and he sketched away, finally settling on a layout idea for a hatchery. Proud of his progress, he slept deeply, waking with the morning sun to set off to the castle.

Roman presented his plan to the current royalty who immediately granted him funding, resources and workers. He requested builders; a permanent gardener to tend to the gardens and take care of the willow tree itself; an interior designer with their accompaniment of woodcarvers and seamstresses. In under a week, the tree was trussed up with wooden levels and beautiful rooms, the garden filled to the brim with flowering plants and new saplings. Animals had started making their homes amongst the new foliage and many overlapping bird songs can be heard filtering through the trees.

The proud sky dancer goes for the last walk through the brand new hatchery before the opening that night, opening the heavy ornate wooden door. The bottom floor is decked out as a foyer with a reception desk off to one side, Roman picked up a few of the potted ferns on the floor and gathered them on the tabletop, leaving enough space for his name label to be seen. He opened the large ledger on the centre of the desk, leafing through the empty pages that were soon to be filled with names. The rest of the room is carpeted in thick soft moss and the walls are draped in thick green vines that already have heavy buds ready to bloom. Across from the main entrance is another smaller but not less ornate door that leads out to the garden. Roman opens it to gaze at the many nests nestled amongst the bush, some were bathed in patches of sunlight, sheltered by flower-covered bushes or even built up with clay blocks. Amaya, the hatchery’s new gardener, is tending to one of the larger bushes which are looking a little droopy, she hums while she works, looking completely at home in the greenery. Roman watches her a little longer, a small smile on his face before closing the door and carrying on with his tour.

There is a large wooden spiral staircase that runs the whole way up and around the inside of the hollow tree and Roman follows it up to the second floor which will be the daycare for hatchlings. This floor is far more bright with many large open windows and the moss carpet is twice as thick and soft with huge fluffy pillows dotting the ground in reds and yellows. The pillows match the buds hanging off the vine-covered walls, the room will look bright and colourful when full of hatchlings and blossoms. Roman lingered longer, imagining families and hatchlings meeting for the first time; the smiles on the children’s faces when they learn they will have a home and a family. His heart warms as he moves up to the next floor.

This floor is much more sparse than the past two, with a short moss carpet and a few windows rimmed with non-flowering vines. The plan was to use this room as one that could change with whatever is needed. Roman envisioned a training ring, a creative space, even a room to hold annual raffles. Since there wasn’t much to show off here he didn’t linger long.

A would-be locked door cut off the rest of the tree from these three bottom floors, indicating private rooms for nesting pairs. Another smaller spiral staircase wound up the centre, branching off into one-roomed, self-sustained units. Each was decorated in moss carpets, green vines and differing complimenting colours. As Roman stared up into the floors of countless rooms he could hear the guests for the Hatchery’s opening night arriving, chattering excitedly. With one last glance around, he made his way back through the floors to greet his guests and start off the night.

Amongst the business of the first few months of the hatchery opening, Roman and Amaya found time to fall in love. Finding it in the stolen moments hiding from loud and excited hatchlings, sneaking lunch together while sitting out in the ever-growing garden. Soon they had hatchlings of their own amongst the ones being taught in the hatchery, very proud of their tree-like young. Their family wasn’t just of blood, they took on each and every hatchling that passed through their doors, one huge happy family.
