Lucas

Lucas has always harbored a deep love for magic and spends every waking moment studying it. After all, he is a fae dragon. Magic is in his very blood. He has an above average grasp of the arts even when compared to others of his breed, however, his one true passion lies in music. In this regard, there are few that can match him in terms of skill. After years of toil and study, he perfected a form of magic that allowed him to weave spells into his music and that also allowed him to manipulate instruments into playing themselves. He can play music himself just fine, he'll have you know, but with the help of his magic, he can preform entire concerts on his own. Lucas is a kind, caring soul and is always the first to jump in when someone needs help. He is apt at caring for injured or sick dragons. The music played by his instruments is somehow able to purge minor illnesses and heal small wounds. Lucas is not sure why the music is able to do this on its own, but he considers it a blessing.

The morning sun crept calmly into Lucas's lair. The air has a cold bite to it, but the light that sneaked in to wake the slumbering fae was warm and enticing. Reluctantly, Lucas answered daylight's call and stretched lazily. Paper crinkled as he lifted his small head. A quick glance down through sleep weary eyes revealed a large book, the text of which was now slightly smudged where Lucas's face had been resting atop it. Lucas sighed. He had fallen asleep studying yet again. How typical of himself.

Gently, he closed the tome and crawled to his feet. It seemed like he fell asleep reading every other night at least. Why did he push himself so hard? More knowledge was always nice, but was it worth the cost of one's personal health? Lucas let out a large yawn and placed the book back on its shelf. He couldn't help it. The alluring call of the spells contained within his books and scrolls bested him every time.

Lucas allowed himself one final stretch then glanced about his lair. Today was the day he had planned to tidy up. He hadn't cleaned very much lately and it was starting to show. Books and scrolls littered the floor, sometimes lying alone and sometimes stacked in semi-neat piles. Papers featuring various scribblings and sketches also cluttered the desk that was supposed to be in the corner of the room. but was instead hidden under Lucas's mass of notes. Yet more evidence to the countless times Lucas had lost himself to his research.

Forcing himself to start the arduous task, Lucas stooped down and gingerly retrieved the nearest pile of books. He supposed he could have used magic to speed the process up, but he was an honest dragon. He made the mess with his own hands, so he would put things back with his own hands. A charming melody hummed in his throat as he labored, lightning the mood and offering encouragement. Lucas loved music. More so than magic itself, music was who Lucas was.

Smiling to himself, he continued to hum and sing his little tune. He waved one paw and his flute sprang to life where it rested atop his piano, adding its soft notes to Lucas's own. Lucas swung his other paw and the piano itself joined the chorus alongside the flute. A swish of his tail and a violin raised its own voice in song. This was Lucas's magic. The spell was of his own creation and, in a sense, represented his very soul.

Lucas moved in time to the music of his bewitched instruments, sliding books back onto shelves and sorting papers as he went. Cleaning no longer felt like such a heavy chore. It was now an elaborate dance that few others could master. A step here, a twirl there and another book was put away. Fae and instrument intertwined, each becoming a part of the other until no sign of the mess remained. Lucas spared only a moment admiring his handiwork, then he was heaving a small cello out of a corner to sit in the middle of the room. Sitting down to celebrate his newly cleaned home in the best way he knew how, Lucas's hands brought the cello to life to join his merry instruments in filling his lair with music.

He sensed the pulses, the rhythms within him, swirling around in endless circles. The flapping of his wings stopped as he lowered himself into the soft material of the chair, right beside the fireplace. He raised his claws and closed his eyes, leaving himself to the wind.

“Lucas?”

He swirled about and his deep purple eyes met a young fae. “Lucas, may you teach me magic? I really love it!” A sweet smile crept over his face and he nodded in agreement as he led the young dragon aside. He twirled his claw and the keys on the piano began to play by themselves. With another twirl, the flutes began to play their melodious music. The room was filled with the sounds of music and they blended perfectly into the atmosphere. The young fae was stunned in awe as the magician played the music effortlessly.

As the sun began to set beyond the horizon, Lucas gently led the young fae home. “It’s great to see you, sir! It’s amazing how you can do so much since you were born! When I grow up, I want to be like you!” The young fae squealed in excitement as the magician flapped his wings and began to rise. As if he suddenly thought of something, Lucas spun around and whispered loud enough for the child to hear, “Remember to always live within the music of your dreams!” While the distant voices of magicians boasting their powers faded away, Lucas seemed to hear something more, like... the sounds of music. But perhaps, it was just an echo.
