May the stars be your guide...

I remember well the day the stars came to me. In a dream, no less. Most dragons spend their whole lives trying to read them and predict their futures. Many fail miserably, their days spent in solitude and loneliness. Day after day passes until they are old and feeble with age..... But not me. My future was so clear. I had fallen asleep against a tree with my Guidebook to the Stars in my claws. It was just another stuffy summer night, or so I thought. The stars were falling at first, raining down their hot whiteness on me. I feared I would be burned alive. But as they touched my scales I felt no pain. They danced around me, bathing me in a silver light. The golden runes etched into my scales began to glow. Slowly, so slowly, the stars reformed into the outline of a great Guardian, one with a healer's mantle about it. I knew not if it was male or female, only that it was beckoning me. It made no gesture at me, but as it stared into my eyes I could feel its intentions. Then, it lifted a talon and pointed to the glowing runes on my scales. Next, at the book that was--in the dream--strapped tightly about my waist. Furrowing my brow, I unlatched it. At that moment, a huge gust of wind blew the book out of my grasp. But it was not the wind. The Guardian's breath had done it. As I looked down, the book was open to a page I had never read before. It was in the Old Language, the one that only the most ancient of dragons still spoke. Luckily, my parents had taught me much of it before they were exalted by the Gladekeeper. The runes on the page were the same ones encircling my body..... "Gaze not at the stars but into your heart, for they are not what you need to chart. As you grow and learn each day, Find, you must, that you need not stray into the blackness of the dark night, but to those that you love: This will make things right...." As I awoke, my vision was blurry. But from what I could see, it was still the middle of the night. It took a few moments for me to remember what all I had experienced. But as I did and my vision started to clear, I saw a golden unicorn bathed in moonlight. It was standing in the exact same spot that the Guardian had been. Its eyes were the same color as well. It took a step toward me, snorted, then bounded away. I gasped and quickly took after it. I don't know how long I ran for. My brain must have still been foggy as well. I ran blindly, my legs deep in swamp water one minute, and pounding on rocky ground the next. Suddenly, we came to a sylvan glade, and the unicorn slowed down. There were tents scattered throughout the place, some still lit by lanterns inside, but all was quiet. All I could hear was my own harsh breathing. The unicorn trotted to a white tent, the biggest one, in the very middle of the glade. It passed through the still tent flaps, and I followed nervously. There she was. The Guardian dragon! She was lying on a pile of deep red cushions and gazing into a crystal ball. She was solid white, except her wings, which were as blue as the clearest sky. An aura of light surrounded her, which is why there was no lantern in the tent. She created her own light. She smiled at the unicorn, then turned to me and spoke with the kindest voice. I nearly cried out with joy. "Moonbeam," she said, reaching out to caress my head, "I knew you would come."

My path in life was finally clear.
The clan would be my family. I would grow old in body but not in mind,
healing hundreds of dragons and helping new ones into the world.
I am Moonbeam, healer of Clan Gladespring.
"Gaze not at the stars but into your heart,
for they are not what you need to chart.
As you grow and learn each day,
Find, you must, that you need not stray
into the blackness of the dark night,
but to those that you love:
This will make things right...."
