Abyss

Abyss is the daughter of Kieran. Born out of a relationship between her father and a mountaineer whom he saved after she was attacked by a terrible beast, Kieran has been her sole caretaker for most of her life. Her mother, while Abyss was still young, and with the amicable permission of Kieran, moved on to explore the other wildernesses of the world.

As she grew older, Kieran had quietly worried about the blood that was in her, coming from a line of violence and death, and so he had her go and learn as much as she could from those willing to instruct her. His hope was that curiousity and an understanding of the world would save her from what he endured when he was young. However, he was aware that she was nevertheless showing the urge to fight, just as he feels, and so he taught her what he knew of combat. What started as lessons of a warrior turned into a bonding of father and daughter through friendly sparring.

Although she had no special powers of her own, one of her teachers was a witch named Umbra, who would nevertheless instruct her on the mechanics of the world regarding the workings of magic and alchemy. Abyss did not need to be a spellcaster in order to understand the workings of such things. Even though it was unusual for a witch to teach magic to someone who was not a mage themselves, she enjoyed the challenge, and Abyss likewise never the less saw such knowledge as invaluable and learned of ways to endure magical combat through sheer will and physical force.

What she could not simply shrug off, however, was when magic went unpredictable. For reasons that Umbra to this day does not understand, a spell she was crafting went wrong and, in a move to save her teacher, Abyss took the brunt of it instead of Umbra. Whereas she went from looking like her father, a dragon of black scales and red-stained wings, thick fur grew from her body, and magic began flow through her like a conduit, glowing in an ethereal luminescence. With new eyes, she could see beyond the trappings of the material world and into one transcendent of it.

Thankfully, it did little to change her personality, and her father has come to accept her new form. In spite of her fusion, she still cannot use magic, though whereas before she was simply unable, now it is because the magic within her body snuffs out any attempt at casting, like water washing over a fire. And so she continues to strengthen her physique, sparring with her father and continuing to learn from Umbra and others willing to teach her.
