Kauket paced back and forth, scowling. Her spies had told her that her father was making an emperor. One of those... multi-headed monstrosities, mockeries of imperials. Oh, she would not sit back and watch that happen. In her anger she had killed one of the messengers, the others immediately scurrying out of her room. So that was the game her father wanted to play, huh? Well, she could play that too. She would fight fire with fire. She stopped, a gleam in her eye. And she knew just how to.

She had her warriors bring her the toughest, strongest nocturnes in the land, though not quite strong enough to even come close to injuring her guards. Bound, muzzled and laid out in front of her, she inspected them. They were all fine specimens, but one caught her eye. A large nocturne, baring his teeth at the guard that was holding him down, murder in his eyes. "This one." She pointed at the nocturne. The guards let go of all the others, who immediately saw their chance to freedom and fled out the door. But with a wave of her hand, the guards cut them down as they started to take flight. Screams could be heard, but she didn't care. The guards dragged the bodies into another room, where the incinerator was. The others quickly mopped up the blood.

The chosen nocturne turned to face Kauket, the same malicious gleam in their eyes, still struggling to break their bonds, still frothing at the mouth. But now she could see that their eyes were tinted with fear, their eyes quivering as silent tears fell down their face. She smiled back at the nocturne. "Take him to the testing chambers." She instructed her guards, still staring at the nocturne. The nocturne thrashed as it was brought to the testing chambers, but it was no use. The imperial guards were too big. Quickly, they restrained the struggling dragon to a metal table, bindings clicking in place around his limbs. The walls were spotless, cleaned after every procedure, and the lights illuminated the room, making the whole place seem a blindingly stark white. They would be red again after this was finished. They knocked out the victim with sleeping gas, and the procedure began. Kauket grinned as she watched the nocturne turn into something horrific. This was for Kek, after all. Kek, who didn't deserve it. Kek, who was her best friend. Kek, who shared bread with her. Kek, who was sacrificed. By her father, no less. Because he was shadow, and has not proven his worth. She sneered. Kek would not go unavenged.

She saw it. Her monstrosity. Her experiment. Her monster. The one who would bring ruin to the Order of the Sun, bring ruin to her father. All who were present, even her darling child, were sworn to secrecy with a blood oath. Only the child got a band-aid. Kauket's child was by her side, shielded and protected. But when it saw the hulking terror, she instead shouted, "Fred!" Giggling, she attempted to hug the nocturne. The noise attracted the nocturne, who looked at her before morphing into the child, making the hatchling laugh louder. Kauket's gaze softened just a bit. This was her new creation, abnormal, a nocturne who could transform into any living creature they saw, and her child was sweet enough to give it a name. She roared, "From now one, this creature shall be called Fred. Anyone who disobeys will be executed." The guards looked around in confusion, but did not say anything. And so with the help of a blindfold upon the nocturne, they escorted it down, down, into its own dungeon chamber.

Oh, she was going have so much fun.

"Kek? Are you alright?" Theia asked, joining her friend to watch the sunset. Kek wasn't looking at her, staring off to the mountains. He'd had a rough past, and Theia was afraid he was remembering it all again; After all, he had witnessed his parents brutal murder at the hands her father, and had lived through those long days when he had been imprisoned in a cell, starving, meant be a sacrifice. The only thing that had saved him was Theia's constant pleading with her father for him to be let go. It had been several years since then, but trauma never really faded, did it? After all, Kek was still afraid of Horus even now.

Kek slowly turned around, and Theia saw his face. He had stretched his mouth out, tongue flapping, and crossed his eyes. Theia burst out with laughter, her worry fading into delight. "You idiot!" She cried slapping Kek's arm as she rolled around. "Don't do that!" Kek grinned too, letting down his funny face.

"Scaredy pants!" He laughed. "Did you think I was sad?" Instead of answering, Theia slapped him playfully. "

Of course not! Did you really think I was worried?" She laughed, though it was apparent to both of them that she indeed had been. "Kek, Kek, look at the sky!" She cried. Kek turned and his eyes widened a bit.

"Woah..." he half-whispered. It was the most beautiful sunset the both of them had ever seen. The sky was painted with luminous golds and oranges, and the clouds were tinted a soft pink. And the sun seemed brighter than ever.

"Oh! I know!" Theia cried. "Father said tomorrow was to be the first day of the Brightshine Jubilee! That must be why the sun's getting stronger! Oh, I'll bet there'll be all sorts of festivities and parties! I've never seen the jubilee before!" she bounced excitedly in her spot. "Kek, what do you think it'll be like?"
Kek shifted uncomfortably. "Oh... I-"
He was cut off as soon as Theia saw the first firefly, her point of attention swiftly changing. "Look, Kek, look! Fireflies! We can catch them for the jubilee!" She caught one between her claws. "Let's go get jars from my dad's place!" She laughed as she took off. "Wait. but your dad doesn't-" Kek called out, but Theia was already gone. Kek sighed and followed, picking up speed to catch up.

"Dad?" Theia cried out. "I'm just going to grab some jars!" Horus, her dad, huffed. "Don't spend too much time playing. You're already a mess."

Theia raced out the door, a jar in hand. "Come on, Kek!"

"Kek?" Horus said with slight interest. “If I could talk to him for a moment?”

Theia uncomfortably shifted as she felt her father’s demeanor shift from flippant to shrewd. That was never good. “Okay... Let me... um... call him.”

She slipped out, jars in hand, and tapped Kek on the arm very lightly with a shaky claw. “Kek, my father wants to... um...”

Kek immediately understood, and interrupted her with a shaky smile, trying to reassure her. It didn't work. Both he and Theia knew that he could not disobey. "I'm coming, Mister Horus!" He called inside. "You go on without me, alright? I'll find you when your father's done with chewing me out about whatever grain of sand I moved this time.", he whispered to Theia.

She nodded. "Okay, but hurry up. I'll be in the hills, catching fireflies."

Theia grinned as she walked to the grounds, her jar full of fireflies. Kek was forgotten in the joy of it all. She had to attend the sacrifices today at midnight, though. Of course, there'd be one on at the beginning of the Brightshine Jubilee. That dimmed her mood a bit, but she couldn't wait to show Kek how many she caught! As she approached the sacrificial grounds, she saw dragons clustered there already. The stone altar had, on top, the form of a dragon, but she couldn't make out who. The only thing that was evident was the sheer panic in their eyes. All the sacrifices had that same look. But for some reason, these eyes seemed eerily familiar...

Her father was already talking, rambling about the greatness of the Lightweaver, and he began to raise the dagger. Theia turned to look away, like she always did, but she suddenly had the urge to turn and look at the dragon. She squinted and could make out was seemed like the features of somebody she knew... Kek?! "Ke-" She cried out. She dropped the jar as she ran. Sparks of light flew out of the jar as she rushed forward, but it was too late.

The knife went down, down, down, down down into Kek's heart and she heard the muffled scream of Kek and there were hands holding her back, comforting her, whispering soft words that were lies, all lies, and oh! Suddenly she saw all his features so clearly now, time slowing down for her. She saw the tears streaming down his face. She saw his eyes, pleading, looking at her. Oh, those cursed purple eyes. It was his eyes, the color of his eyes that had caused everything. If only he had had yellow eyes like her. Just for a second, she locked gazes with those eyes, those eyes that had betrayed Kek, had betrayed her. But then, in an instant, those eyes were dull and glossy, and he was gone. His body went still with a shudder. "-k." Her scream died out into a whisper, and she went down to her knees. And all was still.

Suddenly, there was an explosion of voices in her head. All frantically repeating the same word, overlapping, louder, screaming. Dead. Dead. Dead. His blood was everywhere... EVERYWHERE. It tainted the altar, her father's hands, those around her, EVERYTHING. Even the air smelled of the metallic tang of blood. It was leaking out the ground, it was consuming her, drowning her, why was this happening, why, she needed to go somewhere, anywhere, but she was trapped in her mind, trapped with the awful noises and she was cold, so cold. Voices screamed, accusing, it was Kek’s voice, overlapping and rising higher and higher in volume and pitch. His face, eyes blank and white, stared, tears of blood pouring down his cheeks. She curled up and cried, begging and pleading. She screamed that it wasn’t supposed to happen like this, that she didn’t mean to. But it was no use. Though she could close her eyes, his words rang in her ears, accusing and angry and true.

Theia woke in her bed. She had fuzzy memories of shouting and being carried away, but beyond that, she didn’t remember. All she did know now was that she needed to leave, NOW. Kek had been sacrificed by the order of her father. She couldn't live here anymore. But was he really dead? Kek, who she spent so much time with? No, it was all a bad dream and Kek would come and comfort her, console her. Then she looked out the window and saw the blood on the altar. She staggered to her feet. She had to go. As she limped out, she winced at the sight of her name carved upon the door. Theia. She could still imagine Kek, smiling broadly with the same word on his lips. She couldn't bear the thought of anyone else calling her by that name. No, this name would be reserved for a time when she and Kek were reunited, and he could once again call her name, and they would catch fireflies again. This name was reserved for him, and only him. But until then, she would no longer be called Theia.

As she left, she whispered her new name.

”Kauket.”

Kauket gave a long sigh. She stood, staring at the brightness of the full moon. Fireflies flew around, filling the air with lights. She remembered a day, just like this, a long time ago. The day she could never forget. The day she didn't want to remember.

Kauket pulled out her jar of fireflies she had caught. Her eyes shone with withheld tears when she looked at them. Suddenly, the sight of a knife going down, plunging into flesh, flashed in front of her eyes. She swore as she heard the screams. Blood began to leak from the ground, mutilated claws reaching out to grab her. She stumbled backward, dropping the jar and clutching her head. She closed her eyes, counted to ten, and tried to ignore the accusing voices of her deceased friend, screaming at her in overlapping voices.""̶͉̉W̵̬͒h̴̥̑y̷͂ͅ ̵̲̂d̸̟̾i̸̲̓ḍ̶̏ṉ̴̃'̸̳̿t̵͇̔ ̵̺̉y̶̩̍o̷̝͛ȗ̶̯ ̷͉͠s̸͇̈a̵̫͆v̴̪̂e̵̢͐ ̴̭̇m̷͉̀e̵̺͗,̶͂ͅ ̷̖̅T̶͎͗h̸́ͅę̴̇i̵̡̛â̵͖?̵̣̇ ̸̰͑W̷̥̎h̵̩͌ẙ̵̩ ̸̟͋d̵͍͒i̷̓ͅd̵͙͂ ̶͓̍y̶̧̎ö̴́ͅu̵̻͒ ̶̠͛l̴̘̐e̶̛̟a̸̹̎v̸͇̌ę̵̎ ̷̦͘m̵͙͝è̷̡ ̶͎̎t̶͔̑o̵̲͑ ̸̹̍d̴̼̿í̵̬è̶̬?̸̧̔ ̸͓̌Ỉ̵̻ ̸͍̄t̵̹̎ḫ̷̽ȍ̸̟ụ̴́g̸̼͝h̸̬̏ẗ̴̻ ̴̲̑y̶͖͝o̴̟̽u̶̙̓ ̷̼͐w̸̬̽e̸͙͒r̴̟̿e̵̫̔ ̷̫͑m̴̟͝ẙ̵̯ ̵͂ͅf̵̞̾r̸̛͇ĩ̶͍ḙ̶̿n̵̨̛d̶̰̄.̸̱͆" It wasn't real. It wasn't real. It wasn't real.

Kauket's eyes snapped open, tears streaming. "I TRIED, KEK, I TRIED-", she roared, her words accompanied by hiccuping sobs. It was only then that she looked around to find herself alone in the meadow once more. Wiping her eyes, she mentally scolded herself for reacting like that. Picking up the jar of fireflies, she inspected it, thankful that the only damage that had been done to it was a delicate crack, spiderwebbing down the side. Still stable enough to hold. Bringing the jar to illuminate her way, she descended deep where no light shone. She would need the fireflies' bright light.

She reached the bottom. Navigating her way through the maze designed to hold off her nocturne monster should it ever escape. Her runes and shadow emblem helped a little, glowing in the darkness. She finally came upon the triple enforced obsidian door with magic protection. She suspected even that wasn't enough to hold the nocturne. Only she could. And she would. After all, fear is the best form of motivation. She entered the room, a smile on her face.

The nocturne cowered before her. It was afraid of the Golden-Winged one. It did not know why, but all it did know was that the dragon- no, this demon- was bad, bad, BAD. It had a vague feeling that this fear was from a time it could not remember, when it had been a dragon too. The only thing it was left with after the Change was a strong, overwhelming, primal fear of the Golden One, and the knowledge it was not always a monster. It did not even dare to threaten the strange imperial, instead of submitting to the many tortures they inflicted upon it. The nocturne had multiple scars from their lashings, and several burns, spanning the length of its body. They cowered in a corner as Kauket advanced upon it, knowing it was useless to hide. The monster involuntarily flinched. This was going to hurt.

Once again, Kauket found herself going down the stairs. It had been months since the time she had gone down, on that beautiful, yet so torturous night, a jar of fireflies in hand. She had visited her monster many more times after that. Once, she had found a tunnel leading to her father's emperor's room and had to cover it up before punishing the beast. Insolent, stupid brute. But today, something was going to change. The nocturne had learned obedience. It was time she began treating it well.

She, once again, wound through the maze, coming to a stop before the obsidian doors. Whispering the password, the door slid open. She entered, the door slamming shut behind her. The monster squeezed into a corner as she approached, but she held her hands out. The nocturne still looked at her in fear. She began to approach the monster, who squeezed more into the tiny crevice, trying to disappear. She held up a hand, and it trembled. Kauket slowly began to bring the hand down to stroke the nocturne's snout, and it braced for the worst. It shuddered at her touch. But after a few strokes, it seemed to realize that it was not being hurt, and tentatively opened its eyes. Kauket kept on stroking the nocturne's snout, and it relaxed the tiniest bit, but it kept its eyes open and alert. Still, it was something.

After a long time of her patting the nocturne's snout, Kauket attempted to play with it with some toys. It didn't budge, for fear of a trap. She tried to feed it some treats, and after sniffing it for at least an hour, it determined it was not poisoned and ate some. When Kauket turned around, he hid some. After some fickle attempts at bonding, Kauket left. She was satisfied with her progress today. One could not be expected, after all, to warm up so easily to their torturer. But she did what she must. That was what she always did.
