In Greek mythology, a little owl (Athene noctua) traditionally represents or accompanies Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Because of this it has been used as a symbol of knowledge and wisdom throughout the Western world and is often referred to as the "owl of Athena" .

Her familiar is called Ceann Cait which translates literally from Irish as 'cat head' and is their name for the Long Eared Owl.
