Dreamer ● |
“Remember, Dream,” his mother said to him, when he was but a hatchling and still had much to learn. “There is much we do not yet know, and much we will never know.” He misses his mother. Misses her chalcedony-pink eyes, her wings that shone like stained glass, the scent of old books she wore like a perfume. Born in a small nook of the observatory to a dragon already serving her deity, Dream grew up among dreamers and mages. Like generations of Arcane dragons before him, his biggest dream was the pursuit of the the unknown, of the unknowable. As his name suggests, Dream was always a bit of a dreamer. He longed to explore the world, to discover its hidden secrets. And when he was old enough he left the Observatory and its brooding deity to do just that. |
"I remembered what my mother had told me, once upon a time."
It was deep within the Starwood Strand that Dream met his mentor, an old snapper with books as old as the Arcanist himself. It was here that Dream found his true calling. “So you want to become a mentor yourself, boy?” the snapper rumbled, his voice a deep boom that rattled Dream’s bones. “Well you’d best find something to mentor others at! Tell me young drake, what is it you wish to teach?” Dream told him. He laughed. “Everything! Hate to break it to you, but you can’t teach everything. In order to teach, one must first know.” His golden eyes glittered with mirth as he turned back to his scrolls. “And despite what some may tell you, one cannot know everything.” Dream remembered what his mother had told him, once upon a time. “Then I wish to be a mage,” he said. “So that I may teach others magic.” The snapper turned his head. “A mage, huh? Well then.” He bent forward and dug out an old, musty book, which he handed to the young dragon. “You can start with this.” |

Don't Look Back ● |
Dream blossomed under the old snapper’s tutelage. He became a powerful mage, knowledgeable in the arcane arts. He especially took a shine to healing magic, how no one knew exactly how it worked, only that it did. One day the snapper packed him a bag and sent him on his way. “You’ve learned all I can teach you,” he said, handing Dream a nut trail bar to sate his hunger. “Now go off and show that world what you’re made of.” Dream smiled at the old drake and, turning around, set off down the path. He didn’t look back. |

"The problem with being a mentor was that you first had to find someone who wished to learn."
| ________ |
The problem with being a mentor, Dream thought, was that you first had to find someone who wished to learn. Oh, there were plenty in the Isles who had a desire to learn. But everyone either knew all he had to teach, or else had another teacher. He traveled across all of the Isles and even outside their reaches, but could find no one willing to learn from him. Disheartened, Dream gave up his search. He settled down in a small Shadow village that had no need for a teacher and dedicated his time to learning more healing magic. |

"I hear she’s unbeatable. That she fought the deities themselves and won!"

Warrior ● |
Soon the whispers came, hushed voices in the local tavern where Dream spent his nights. “Have you heard?” they would say in hushed voices. “The Untouchable Warrior is passing by!” “I hear she’s unbeatable,” another would say. “That she fought the deities themselves and won!” Dream would have payed them little heed if not for the next rumor. “Can you believe she doesn’t use any magic at all? Doesn’t even know it, not even a healing spell! Just waits for her opponent to move first, and then slashes out with her claws!” Maybe, Dream thought, just maybe there is one who is looking for a teacher. |
"But Sylvara remained stubborn, and so they parted ways."
No such luck. Dream found the Sylvan Warrior, Sylvara, a fellow Arcane dragon with midnight scales and chalcedony eyes. But when he offered to teach her magic, she only scoffed and replied that she had no need for that. “Please,” Dream pleaded, almost begged. “Just a healing spell, and I won’t bother you again!” But Sylvara remained stubborn, and so they parted ways. |

Apologies ● |
It was nearly a year before they saw each other again. He was in Wind territory this time, looking up their magic. He could not use it himself, but maybe it would provide an insight he could use for his own. He was studying a large tome in an old and breezy library when he heard a voice. “Excuse me?” Dream looked up. And there in front of him was Sylvara. “Sylvara!” he exclaimed, putting his book down. “What a pleasant surprise! Please, do sit down!” She sat. They chatted for a while, exchanging pleasantries, before she cleared her throat. “I wanted to apologize,” she said. “I was rude, the last time we met. Arrogant. I believed that I was untouchable, that no one could defeat me, that I had no use for the healing arts.” And so she explained what had happened since they’d last seen each other, how she’d fought against an ancient imperial and lost. “He was right,” she said. “I was proud, arrogant. I believed in what they said about me being unbeatable, and I was wrong.” “Why are you telling me this?” Dream perked up. “Do you perhaps wish to learn…” But Sylvara shook her head. “No,” she said. “I left home to avoid learning magic; I have no wish to learn it now. "But I did want to tell you that there’s a small clan near what locals call the Spyre Falls. They’re looking for a mage. It’s not quite what you’re looking for, but maybe they’ll be more open to learning from you.” Dream smiled. “Thank you.” |
"It was a dark and cold night when he saw the falling stars."
It was a dark and cold night when he saw the falling stars, on his way to the clan Sylvara had told him about. And it was a bright and sunny one when he once more chanced upon Sylvara. But this time she wasn’t alone. “They need a teacher,” she said, watching fondly as the tiny fae chased her guardian friend. “Someone to mentor them, teach them the ways of the world. I would do it, but all I know is battle.” She looked up at Dream, who smiled. He had finally found his calling. |
