When you grow up a poor starving orphan in a society that values physical power you do what you gotta do to claw your way to the top. Sure, "the top" is "a general of an empire that commits war crimes for fun" and "what you gotta do" is "become a murderous necromancer" but he's fine. It's fine.
A journey of self-discovery and making amends later, and he's mostly alright. Still thinks he's better than everyone else, that violence will solve all his problems, and that he can have a little prejudice (as a treat), but he isn't actively doing bad-guy things. Just making Frankenstein'd creatures out in the woods nothing to see here
