This dragon has set out on a journey through Sornieth during Brightshine Jubilee '19 from Sunday, June 23 'til June 30. It is one of many that wants to visit lairs and clans, hoping to receive lore before being sent back to their home after the adventure is complete. Even years later they will be able to look back at this time by going through the poetry, prose and art they received, as well as all the encounters, adventure, new friends and enemies they encountered.
Please, keep in mind...
not to purposely edit or delete lore made by other users

Gloam

Personality Trait | Personality Trait | Personality Trait

The young hatchling was something of an unexpected addition to the brightshine lair exchange. Indeed having hatched earlier that day, she could be considered to be the ultimate new arrival. But with both her parents being battle mages, and the chaos of the pandora's box opening, they weren't able to look after her as well as they might have liked, and sized on the opportunity to see her looked over by a larger clan for the time being. Normally Jade would be the dragon for the job, but with the oracle and clan co-leader Harris temporarily out of commission, and her own nest ready to hatch any day, she was too busy.

Maokai and Merwin stepped in instead, having had some experience with young pearlcatchers from their own nests, and plenty of tinkering toys from Xii to entertain and educate Gloam during her stay.

Shortly after Kuunvalo had set out to Light to join the festivities, promptly & unexpected by her clan, a message of her arrived, about a hatchling needing ... sitters?

"The kid seems to be very curious & lively & her parents are busy with containing the chaos over here. Light really needs them. Another clan here has taken her in for the time being, but I'll send an escort soon & will look for a place she can go to next."

Naveen's crest formed to a more and more happy expression upon reading the message, and she looked up to Veris - of course they'd take in everyone in need, and if it filled Naveen with joy, even better. Though he couldn't relate unless it was about his own children, he thought it was admirable how loving she was.

Upon arrival of Gloam, as was the name of the little Pearlcatcher girl, though, Naveen had to find she wasn't too interested in her.
Instead she immediately hopped out of her bag and began running around, looking at every colorful flower and strange insect she could find, marveling at everything new - but never letting her pearl out of sight.

The dragons of clan Vertere though, didn't catch her interest (Naveen didn't mind, happy to just look over her while she played and explored) - well, Gloam had seen many dragons already, but Nature territory was foreign & exciting!
That was until she catched a glimpse of Akanth.

Running up to and around him, the older - but still young - dragon came to a halt a little startled, looking down to the little bouncing thing, seemingly not sure what to make out of it.
"Like me!", she exclaimed.

Somewhere deep down Akanth thought it was cute, but the adolescent dragon he was he only huffed and tried to step away. Not enough time had passed since he himself had been her size (but much less her energetic nature) to not act indifferent.

But she didn't leave his side.
"Aren't you a Pearlcatcher?" - "Yes I am." - "See! Like me! And you're Light, too! We look the same!" - "We don't. There are a lot of Pearlcatchers & a lot of them of Light element." - "I knooow. But you look like me!"
If at all, it would be the other way around, Akanth thought. He was older after all. He layed down near a tree, not trying to communicate those thoughts to such a young kid.
"See!" Gloam spread her wing and held the tiny limb against Akanth' flank. "Same colour.", she said in a softer tone, smiling up at him.
Akanth merely huffed again and turned his head the other way to lay it down.

She ran away and for a moment Akanth believed she had lost interest, but it was only a few steps to reach her pearl and roll it closer to where her new friend had settled.

Suddenly she made an alarmed noise. "Don't you have a pearl?"
Akanth didn't even open his eyes, but this time the huff was displeased. "Of course I do..."
"But you don't have one!", she had walked up around him and to his face and he reluctantly blinked through one eye.
"It's just not here." - "Where then?"
He lifted his head to turn it towards the other side. "Someone ... is keeping it for me..." - "Who?"
"..."
The lack of an answer couldn't hold Gloam back - she stared down to his face again on the other side, already. "Where is that someone?"
"He's somewhere in the forest..." - "Why? Is he not a clanmate?" - "Hm.... He kind of is... But kind of isn't..." - "That does not make any sense!" - "Maybe it doesn't..."
Now it was Gloam who adopted his huff and sat down. "Well isn't it important to you?"
Akanth stayed silent for a while, but eventually opened his eyes and lift his head again.
"Of course it is", he slowly began to explain. "But it's not as pretty as yours. Its ... hmm..." Well, how should he put it? He didn't even know exactly himself. "Like its ... ill... But it will be fine again & then I can keep it..." Or so he hoped...
"Ohh... That must be tough. I don't even want mine to be touched by anyone else..."
"Hmh. But don't worry about it. And keep it a secret okay?" Akanth was well aware how most Pearlcatchers would think of one without a pearl... Even if it wasn't gone for good.
Gloams eyes sparkled upon hearing the word 'secret' and she gave one determined nod.
"Alright", he couldn't help but smile a bit. "Wanna go play with the clan's familiars?"

What could be better for a traveling hatchling than a day of learning new skills? Why, a day of having fun while doing it, of course! But how did she get to that point?

Taking care of a little one hadn't been part of Seawater's plans for the day when she first woke, but Rosewilt categorically refused to let the lone hatchling that'd arrived in the middle of the night wander unattended. They couldn't afford another incident like yesterday's. The Entropy creature lurking in the depths of the lair had terrified poor Ecru, and all it did was float past her, buzzing and bubbling. What if it actually ghosted through someone? Its passing already turned food and drink to rot and ash. What would that do to living tissue?

No. No, they couldn't risk letting the new child get into such trouble. They had only just survived the purging of the Glowshrooms; a war between dragon clans would end them for sure. For this reason, Borosilica assigned Seawater the day watch.

"The others are tired," the clan patriarch had said, "And to be honest, that child needs a bath."

"Don't be mean!"

The old Mirror chuckled. "It's true and you know it. Convincing a hatchling to wash is a trial on the best of days, and Gloam has a full trip's worth of filth and sweat stuck to them. They are as sour as a lemon orchard. Take them with you to fish and swim; that will soon solve the problem. You'll be a hero in the eyes of our noses."

"'The eyes of your noses?' How strange. Have you seen a doctor about them?"

"Cheeky thing. Go on, now, before Corroda comes to me complaining that the stink has permeated her books."

"But I was to fish the Ampelope Horn River today," Seawater protested, her anchoring chains shaking and clanking as she stomped a foot. "She is too small and weak for that, and Anahita has gone to travel! The water will carry her away."

"Then go to the lake. We have plenty of river fish in storage."

"Fine, fine. I will go get the hatchling rod."

Borosilica cupped his paws around his mouth and shouted for the hatchling. "Gloam! Come here, dear child! Today you will go on an expedition. Isn't that grand?"

Seawater shook her head and fluttered off to get the supplies. At least Gloam wasn't a Ridgeback. Then they'd all be in real trouble.

I caught it all by myself! Can I keep it? Please?

Mythos Clan
Shadow
The notice comes through for Ki, a hastily scribbled note from an Earth clan she knows only in passing, and the request that Mythos host a small Light hatchling whose parents were far too important to the containment of Pandora's Box to give her the required attention. The Snapper shows this to Shiva, who agrees absentmindedly.

This wasn't a particularly new thing for the clan, the hosting of a traveling dragon, but Gloam was certainly their very first foreign hatchling. She arrives, hand clutching that of a much taller dragon who gives Ki instructions, and immediately sets off on a small exploration of her own around camp.

It is Tenjin who steps in, excited about the prospect of a child to look after so long after his own had upped and moved away. This had somehow slowly become something he enjoyed doing, playing with the hatchlings, telling them stories, and the male follows the young hatchling with a contented sigh – much to Ki's relief.

Flowering Vulpine Plushie Nocturne Puppet Stuffed Alstroemeria Fox

Tenjin is more than happy to entertain her, putting on puppet shows and flying over the Tangled Wood with Gloam on his back, the hatchling only a fraction of his size. And so it goes, the two of them off on daily adventures, sometimes accompanied by other children, much to Gloam's delight.

One day they are, all four of them, exploring a field of lucky stars somewhere in the neighbouring woods of Mythos when Gloam finds a small nymph hidden underneath a larger leaf. "Seems like I am lucky after all", she says to Tenjin, pointing to the small creature that now rests atop her pearl. The older Imperial lets out an amused snort, then pats her gently on the head. "So it does."

When the time comes to send her away, as is the nature of those things, Tenjin flies her over to the young hatchling's next destination and it's all he can do not to cry on the way back, lest his tears freeze at such high altitude.

Day 5

Sol Auri
Rusted Crown
Light
Fulgur, Yixing and Lantana were waiting for the arrival of the Imperial and the hatchling, which was announced a while ago.
"I am so excited! There!"
"Relax." Yixing glanced to his sister, shaking his head slowly. "She won't stay long. We are just one destination in her journey." But Lantana didn't pay attention to him.
Of course she agreed to take care of the little girl. There were just a few hatchlings in the clan right now and even if she really enjoyed the calmer days, she was far more excited abour the young visitor than anyone else.
When the Imperial landed and the young Pearlcatcher's feet touched the grond, Lantana was immediately by her side.

"Hello cutie! How are you? Do you need something? What's your name?", her high voice made Yixing close his eyes with a quiet huff.
"Gloam."
"Gloam!" Lantana turned her head to her brother, checking his reaction. "Did you hear that? Gloam is such a beautiful name, isn't it?"
"Wonderful", Yixing answered with a patient smile, before he stepped over to his father who was talking to the Imperial.

"I wish you a safe journey." Fulgur lowered his head a bit, Yixing copied this gesture and soon the dragon was gone.

"You want to play with the other hatchlings?" Lantana patted Gloams head, looking up to their father, with a bright smile. Yixing understood his decision leaving the hatchling in Lantana's paws. Even if his sister was overambitious, she did now how to take care of young dragons. Probably it wouldn't be necessary for him to be here - surely he could return to Aedon soon.

Gloam shook her head.
"No? What do you want to do instead?"
"Adventure!"
"Adventure...?" Lantana laughed in suprise, turning her head to her brother. "What does she mean with 'adventure'?, she whispered.
"Adventure!" Gloam stomped her little paw on the ground, her pearl pressed to herself.
Fulgur smiled slightly. "Seems like she got other plans."
"But... The brightshine festival in the hatchlinggarden! We have some wonderful games and snacks and will sing and..."
"No!" Gloam turned her back to Lantana.
"Gloam, sweety, I..."
Fulgur lifted his paw, looking down to his children and Lantana went silent immedately. "You two will take good care of our guest. Alright?"
"Yes", they answered simultaneously, waiting silently till their father had left far enough.

"I need to go to the hatchlinggarden... Amissa is waiting for me!", Lantana whispered.
"You don't say. I left Aedon alone. He wanted to read, but..."
"Well, he will find enough books in your shack."
Yixing made an uncomfortable noice. "Yeah, guess so. And... Amissa surely will take good care of the hatchlings as well."
Lantana sighed. "I guess. Wish Asca was here, he probably would know what to do."
With an approving nod Yixing looked over his shoulder to the hatchling, rolling her pearl over the paving stones.

"Let's go to the hatchlinggarden. When she sees the other dragons, she probably is going to play with them."
As soon as Yixing spoke those words, a scream let both of them turn around.
"Gloam!"

The young girl was chasing after her pearl, which rolled down a small hill next to the way they stood on.

The pearl rolled right into the flower field, out of sight for the hatchling.
"No!", she cried, "my pearl!" The two mirrors soon catched up to her, softly holding the Pearlcatcher back who tried to climb over the fence.
"Shhh.", Lantana patted her head, smiling slightly. "Don't worry, it can't be far away."

"Tears fell on the ground, when Gloam looked up to the mirrors. "But... but..."
"Let's search it together. Ten eyes see more than two, right?" Gloam nodded slowly, still sobbing.
Yixing layed on the ground, smiling. "Hop up, we will find it in no time!"
Lantana helped the Hatchling to get on Yixings back, before opening the gate.
A few minutes after searching in the high flowers, Gloam screamed out in excitement, poining to her lost pearl.
She hopped down, before Yixing could lay on the ground, running towards the shimmering pearl, pressing it close to her body, still crying, this time in relief.
"I guess this was enough adventure for today." Yixing smiled, looking at his sister. "Let's bring her to the hatchlinggarden. Some snacks and a nap may be exactly what she needs now."

Day 6

Scatterspark Outpost
Light
When the little hatchling arrives in Scatterspark Outpost for the day, she's dazzled by the decorations and festivities. Even though Brightshine Jubilee is winding down, the dragons here are still jubilant. The marketplace is adorned with banners and strings of lamps, bright even in midday, and music rings out from radios placed here and there. As they go about their day-to-day business, the dragons of the outpost stop to chatter, laugh, and occasionally sing or dance, enjoying the company of their neighbors.

Is it possible that the party is being held just for her? Gloam thinks that it just might be!

Almost as soon as she enters, she's greeted by a gentle-looking Coatl of white, slate, and pink. His eyes are a bright aqua, matching the pretty ribbon around his neck.

16612274.png

"Hello there," he calls, his voice a soft trill as he approaches. "Are you Gloam? I've been waiting for you."

"I'm Gloam!" the hatchling agrees. At once, she scampers away from her escort from Sol Auri, toward the pink Coatl. "Hello! Is this party for me?"

"Ah!" The Coatl seems startled by the question, but then he smiles. "Of course. It's for every visitor to our town today, and you are the most special visitor of all."

Gloam straightens up, tossing her mane with pride. "I am!"

But her preening is interrupted almost at once, by a shrill cry of, "Quartz, no!"

24314040p.png

There's another hatchling running toward them, a pink Nocturne with vibrant red eyes. "I'm the most special!" he cries, clambering up onto the Coatl's back.

At once, the hatchling caretaker's attention shifts to the other hatchling. "Shh, Rigel. It's alright. You are the most special. You are both special," he insists. Neither of the hatchlings look particularly convinced of that, so Quartz adds, "You are the most special hatchling in our family. And Gloam is the most special hatchling visiting us." He shifts his pink wings, gently brushing Rigel back to the ground. "Introduce yourself to your guest, sweetling."

The pink Nocturne heaves a heavy, dramatic sigh. "Alright. Hi, my name is Rigel, I live in Scatterspark Outpost and my guardian is Papa Quartz." The words are obviously recited; Papa Quartz must have made him practice many times.

He has such a pout on his face as he introduces himself that Gloam can't help but feel a little better. She's so much more grown-up than this hatchling! "My name's Gloam," she says, gracefully. "I'm an adventurer."

Rigel's mouth falls open in astonishment. "Oh! I'm an adventurer!" he claims. "Papa Quartz, I want to be an adventurer!"

"Oh, is that so?" Quartz asks. His tongue flicks, in and out, as he looks down at Gloam. "Would the two of you like to go on an adventure today?" The suggestion is met with immediate cries of "Yes!" by the two hatchlings, now bouncing up and down with excitement, and Quartz chuckles. "Alright, alright! Let's go on an adventure."

Despite his quiet demeanor, Quartz is a skilled handler of hatchlings, somehow managing to keep the hyperactive little ones more or less wrangled. He takes them to the outskirts of town, where a little stream trickles out of the cliffside into a pool of cool, clear water. The hatchlings spend the afternoon splashing in the water and playing on the rocks, snapping up bugs and looking for lizards.

"Oh! A fish, a fish!"
"It's not a fish, it's a seaweed!"
"No, there was a fish in the seaweed, I saw it!"
"Aiieek! It touched me!"

When the hatchlings begin to get cranky from the heat, Quartz takes them back to the hatchery. After a snack, he gives Gloam and Rigel some fingerpaints, which are promptly smeared all over the paper, their scales, the table, and the floor.

But even the most energetic hatchlings fall asleep eventually. Quartz tucks the two of them into a warm nest for the night, and watches over them for a moment or two with a smile. Who would have expected a little hatchling to visit their outpost for the festival? But he's glad that Rigel had some time to play with another little one, even if only for a few hours today.

Tomorrow, Gloam will be passed into the care of another clan, but she'll take with her the memories polished into her pearl, and the painting she made with Rigel, commemorating their adventure and their new friendship.

shanncrafter - Plague
______ It is late when Gloam steps into the tavern on the outskirts of the Plaguebringer's domain. The small town that she finds herself in is already dark and quiet, and the only warm, welcoming place in sight is that-- a small building not much bigger than an inn, with light pouring from the windows and faint chatter coming from within.

Gloam heads straight for it with considerable relief, and has already opened the door when she remembers that she likely doesn't have enough treasure for a hot meal, let alone a drink.

The chatter fades slightly as she hovers uncertainly at the threshold. The tavern isn't full, but there is a fair number of dragons drinking and talking and laughing away. Some of them shoot her disinterested looks and return to their conversation. Gloam gulps nervously and is just about to turn away and head back into the lonely night, when a voice behind her calls: 'Table for one, then?'

She turns to find a ridgeback looking at her inquisitively from across the tavern.

'Oh, um.' Gloam looks at her claws. 'I don't have any--'

'Treasure?' The ridgeback smiles warmly as she makes her way over. 'That's alright. You look like you could use a-- deities above, child, what are you doing alone out here?' Towering over Gloam, the ridgeback can now make her out properly. She ushers Gloam to an empty table near the bar, sits her down, and promises to come back with something to eat in a few minutes.

Gloam, who up to now was convinced she would be kicked out, is too surprised to protest. She sits, accepts the glass of water that the ridgeback hands her moments later, and tries not to let her stomach grumble too much as she quietly watches the dragons around her.

She lifts the glass to her lips and takes a long drink. When she sets it down again, three dragons-- a pearlcatcher, a snapper, and a guardian-- have appeared before her. Gloam squeaks in shock and nearly tumbles from her seat, but the snapper reaches over reassuringly.

'Relax, sugar.' The snapper says. 'We're just a little surprised to see someone--'

The pearclatcher interrupts, deadpan-- 'You're in our seat.'

'Hey, wait!' The guardian peers at her and Gloam shrinks under the gaze. 'You're just a hatchling? Aren't you a little too young to be out here by yourself?'

There's a pause as Gloam opens her mouth to answer, but a voice thunders from the kitchen: 'Zeta, Ersa, Iaso! You'd better not be scaring that child or I swear, I'll tan every one of your hides!'

The ridgeback bursts from the doors to the kitchen, carrying a plate of something whose delicious scent makes its way to Gloam's nose. Her stomach growls. Loudly. The three dragons look nervous and the snapper, Ersa, speaks up. 'Myllda, we weren't tryin' to start nothin', I swear.'

To the others, Myllda snaps, 'Then you can share the table with us.' Then she plonks the plate down. 'Go on, then,' she says and hands the cutlery to Gloam.

Gloam thanks her and Myllda grins kindly in return. As the other three dragons take their seats around them and start to banter, one of them, the pearlcatcher who'd glared at her earlier, looks apologetically at Gloam and asks, 'What about you? What's your story?'
