Merak stole away from home, while still a hatchling, by attaching himself to a rich-looking dragon named Vindler. Instantly falling for Merak's facade, the Spiral took pity on him, believing that he was terribly lonely and neglected, and brought him to the Fletching Clan in Wind. There he was spoiled just as rotten as he had dreamed.

When word reached his delicate ears that a rebellion was in the works, Merak fled the clan — without a backwards glance — in search of a new place to spread his wings. He prefers large, well-established territories, but, so far, none have satisfied him long enough to stick around.
