Biography
MOSSMERE
Warrior | Stoic | Loyal | Dignified | Honorable
LORE
Mossmere cuts an imposing figure from a distance, but up close his baleful stare and his bone-white armor are enough to send a shiver down the spine of many a dragon. Beneath his horned helmet, though, his smile is quiet and kind.
When he first found his way to Excursio's clan, he was a proud young dragon traveling away from home for the first time, clad in gleaming armor and searching for glory and adventure. His boastful manner annoyed many in the clan, and there were those among the older families who questioned why Excursio allowed the arrogant young Imperial to stay.
They didn't see Mossmere lurking on the edges of the warriors' circle, listening raptly to their tales of battle and the hunt. They didn't notice how he would always step to the side whenever Incursio or Orion rushed past, flattening himself to the wall in order to stay out of their way. And they definitely didn't see Mossmere laying awake at night, staring despondently into the empty eyeholes of the white helmet as he tried to figure out how to shift his world so that it lived up to all that he had been promised.
But one dragon noticed.
"Hey, kid," said a voice from the roof of the cave one day. A purple and gold Spiral was staring down at him, his orange eyes blazing in the gloom. "I know it's hard. It wasn't long ago that I was sitting around the cave moping for a dream the stories told me I couldn't have. I was supposed to stick to being an electrician, but I didn't let that stop me - not once my friends helped me realize that more was possible."
The young Imperial stared up at the Spiral as his pride wrestled with his weariness. "But how can I live up to my dreams like this?" Mossmere finally sighed. "All I have are stories - I wanted to be a warrior, but I don't know anything! I can't hunt, I can't track, I can't fight..."
The Spiral perched on his back, ignoring Mossmere's incredulous stare. "At least you can unbend your pride enough to that now," he pointed out. "You've already changed a lot from when you first joined the clan. But kid, I'll let you in on a secret. Fighting isn't about glory and honor - it's about protecting who and what you love. Without a reason to fight, being a warrior is meaningless."
"But I don't have anything worth fighting for," Mossmere objected.
"And there's your problem," the Spiral pointed out. "Figure that out, and you'll find the rest will follow."
The little dragon launched off of Mossmere's back and began flitting down the tunnel. "Wait!" Mossmere called after him. "What's your name?"
"Oh, me?" the Spiral said with a grin. "My name's Sirocco. I'll see you in training!"
The training was hard, and at the end of the day Mossmere would curl up in his nest covered in bruises and scrapes. His gleaming armor became dull and pitted with scratches. But the newfound respect and acceptance in the eyes of his clanmates, and his friendship with Sirocco, made all the pain worth it.
Now, when he fell asleep at night, he was smiling.
